I've been interested in photography for a long time and have decided to seriously persue it. I own a Canon 30D and have been dabbling with some photoshoots here and there the past couple of years. I now have more time to focus on photography but it seems there is so much to learn that it's quite overwhelming to think about. Any tips or suggestions for an amatuer photographer?

In the "Learn" tab on the menu bar you will find various tutorials and how-to topics. This would be the best place to start.

Your question is otherwise too broad to be addressed. We have no idea what appeals to you, subject-wise, for example. So until you have more specific questions, there's really not much we can offer as individuals, I'd say...

well for me, the first thing i did was research aperture, shutter speed, and iso. What they are, how they work, and most importantly, how they work together. in your study of aperture, you'll more than likely come across depth of field and how to achieve shallow and deep and what each is useful for. if you already have a handle on that, then you're well on your way. the next step is to go out and shoot like crazy, experiment, and see how everything works out.

for post processing, check the tutorials here, and all over the internet. what i usually do is browse through some photos and when i see something awesome that i don't know how to do, i look for a tutorial somewhere that i can follow to help me get the same effect. for instance, the recent tilt shift challenge. there are good tutorials all over that can show you how to take a normal photo and make everything look mini :)

and don't forget to use dpc as a huge resource! ask questions in the forums, there are a lot of smart, friendly, and helpful people around here.

Depends on what your current level of skill is. Assuming you are in need of the basics, I would suggest learning the following for starters:
-Fundamentals of compostion
-Basic camera skills (Understanding exposure modes, aperture, shutter speed, etc.)
-Basic image adjustments (levels, curves, saturation, contrast sharpening, cropping)

Here are some free guidebooks that offer some basic instruction

As Bear said, without knowing more about your interests or current skill level, only the most general suggestions can be offered.

Thank you guys so much. I really appreciate the info. The direction i want to go into is an edgy, abstract kind of glam rock type style...but I would still like to learn about other styles as well. Anything to help me improve my skills:)

You might like what cutout does. His abstract approach tends to appeal to a narrow group, but looking over his last few challenge entries, it appears that I am part of that narrow group.
