i made a point of not voting on challenges i entered so as not to have a conflict of interest.
i was steered in a different direction by a wise member who pointed out that i shouldn't be judging entries against my own but against my regular standard.
however i know there are still many users who just don't vote on challenges they've entered. accept their comments as validation of your photo.

I love when new photos make it too my profile page. In the last few challenges I've had 3 out of the 5 photos push others off the profile page so I know how exciting that is! Good luck with your entry. :)

Hey Joe, I agree with your practice, but I don't have any problem voting others photos considerably higher than my own submission if the photo deserves it. While there are certainly people who vote in ways to protect their own chances (at least in their minds) I think the majority of DPC'ers are honest with themselves and judge other photos based on it's merits rather than jockey to position photos against their own. In a perfect setup it would be nice not to be eligible to vote in your own challenges, but the reality is if everyone was restricted from doing so or it was an enforced rule we would all be getting about 50 votes on regular challenges (if that) and about 10 on a Free Study. LOL. To me it seems that there aren't enough voters left once you remove the votes of people in the challenge. Not saying you advocate a system like this, but it's how I see it working which comes out to be less fun in my eyes. Life is always a catch 22 situation isn't it?

after some thought, i have begun voting on challenges i enter. so far I feel pretty good about not judging photos against my own, nor trying to "skew" results...i'm currently earning a 5.2 in "bug" but voted an average of 6.7. I think it would be a better environment if everyone could follow suit....but I still understand those who won't vote on their "own" challenge.

In a way, this practice also skews the results. These participants do not reward the pictures they deem to be good with votes that will increase the score. Assuming the owners of those photos voted, they could have boosted the picture of the non-voter with a high score. If both the voter and the non-voter have competitive entries, the voter will be penalized. |

Agreed, however you will not change the minds of those people, just as they will not convince you and I to abstain from voting the challenges we are entered in. |

Are you here to learn about photography through constructive criticism or just gather votes?
Just be happy that people are willing to give of their time to help others and whether they choose to vote or not is their own prerogative.
I personally choose not to vote in challenges I have entered (and have done so in this challenge) but will still continue to comment regardless of your opinion.

And I got a comment from you earlier today. It was appreciated. Actually, the comments mean more. It usually takes more time and thought to leave a comment than a vote. Everyone has their own approach to what they find appropriate. |

I am here for constructive criticism 1st, advice 2nd, and voting 3rd. Telling me you like my picture but not willing to help it move up in the ratings is just mean. I can't tell someone how to act, and I was more tounge and cheak in the statement, but still.
Side note, I vote on all pics in every challenge I am in unless there is a moral reason not to vote. (I.E. if I gave someone my opinion before the picture is submitted.)
I just realized it was your coment that set me off, and re-reading the coment I would like to say thank you for the nice things you said about my picture. All week it has been getting torn apart for the same thing and it is nice to get a compliment too sometimes.

My apologies for missing your tongue and cheek.
Initially I thought I was here for the voting and the competition of beating others with my "better than theirs" photos.
I have since learnt that voting is extremely subjective and what one may think is a gem is another person's 1 or 2 vote, without any comments at all.
Hence voting, as I see it, may be important to some but not to others.
Each to their own.
Side note, I vote on all pics in every challenge I am in unless there is a moral reason not to vote. (I.E. if I gave someone my opinion before the picture is submitted.)
I vote as often as possible and my moral reason, for not voting in challenges I have entered, is that I do not wish to be influenced by the lowly scorers who give my 6 and 7 rating photo a 1 and 2 with no explanation.
Sort of leaves a bitter pill in my mouth and I do not wish that to reflect upon other people I am competing against.
So, as to refrain from any bias I gladly comment, to help others, but do not vote.
I just realized it was your coment that set me off, and re-reading the coment I would like to say thank you for the nice things you said about my picture. All week it has been getting torn apart for the same thing and it is nice to get a compliment too sometimes. |
I figured my comment with the (Not voting) message may have contributed by the appearance of your posting not long after I left it.
I'm glad it may have helped, but just remember, if I had voted it doesn't necessarily mean I would have moved your picture up in the ratings. ;-)
Enjoy the site for what it is, keep submitting and learn from the whole process.

Here's a reminder that I think is due in all the scoring threads.
Calling out a commenter in the forums, with details, basically identifies your entry to them (or narrows the field). And sometimes to others as well. That includes "Thank you for your comment" publicly posted as well. If I say "Thank you Fred for your nice comment about my entry", it's possible that I've just identified my entry to Fred.
And criticizing comments received publicly may not only identify you, but it will likely discourage other people from commenting.

well, it goes up then slides down...then crawls and claws it's way back up then...the chute opens up again...and it starts all over again...it will probably make it to my best scores...not the best...but it should make my page...man oh man if I just cursed it I'll cry... |
