So I'm looking for a surround sound system, and while i'm finding a lot of solid ones, my hesitation is in how to rig it up. The room I'm putting it in is rather odd shaped, and not really sure how to deal with it, or if i should just get the bose 2.1 and be happy with that.
Its sort of an L shaped room with the tv in the corner. Ill try and draw a picture. |

Units like my Harman Kardon can analyze the room after you place the speakers and it will make adjustments accordingly internally...

If you don't need a THX certified system, just locate the speakers based on where people sit, not the room.
Just be sure the subwoofer is in a corner if at all possible. they seem to work great in corners! |

Wired or wireless? Just curious as to how flexible you are in layout.
I've recently acquired a home theatre system (stereo with dvd player and surround sound speakers). The manual and onscreen menu/setup is quite helpful. It lets you electronically adjust/specify the distance from the viewing area to each speaker in the setup and it automatically compensates. You can also manually override the volume for each piece of the system as well if you need to tweak it. I was very surprised at home easy it was, and how far these surround sound systems have come in the last 10 years (last time I bought one).
If you go wireless and use speaker stands, you shouldn't have any problem with getting the sound you want. If you have a wired system you may be limited in where you run your wiring, unless you're lucky enough to have access to the basement under the room your setting up in. I did this in my last house and drilled a small hole in the floor (carpet covered it) to bring the wiring up to each location needed.
Good luck! :-)

I didn't even think of coming up through the basement floor. Awesome idea. I think im going to end up just getting the 2.1 Bose system and being happy with that. |

what you want is Tannoy speakers. They are dual concentric which means there is no "sweet spot" for sound -- ie. no one spot where the mids and the tweets cross to give you the best sound rendering. Tannoy's speakers sound good from any angle. Arena's are nice, and I used them in my L shaped living room and got great sound all over.
Whatever you do, don't get Bose if you really care about good sound. There are some more expensive brands than Tannoy that are also good, but you can put Tannoy's up against $10k speakers and they sound impeccable.
ETA: I am married to a speaker rep, so I have listened to MANY MANY speakers and amps and other pieces of equipment and have a suprisingly vast knowledge base for "just a girl".

Tannoy aye? I'll check it out.
While I want it to sound good, I'm not audiophile when it comes to TV/VIDEOGAMES so i'm not too concerned with perfection haha. |

Depending on your budget, you might want to look at Cambridge SoundWorks who generally make a product at a better price point than many better known brands. Or you can cheap out like I did, and look at speaker systems designed for computers, for $150 I got a pretty big sound with a wired subwoofer/ controller, and 2 wireless speakers that can produce more sound than I care to listen to. Of course The TV is also hooked up to the main system in the living room, but since I got the little computer speaker system, I just don't use it. |
