Some very nice features in the latest release of Opera,
For example, you can setup a folder on your PC with music or photos to share with people. Opera then assigns your PC a fixed URL (e.g. my laptop is //tp.jhonan.operaunite.com) So when my laptop is switched on, that URL directs people to it.
Very neat technology. It also has a web-server that you can enable to setup one folder on your PC as a website (no php etc., just simple HTML)
It does other browser things; the turbo mode is good for slow connections, it compresses the website at the Opera servers before sending it to you (e.g. I'm viewing DPC now at 3x compression, which has the effect of compressing the hell out of all the JPGs on the site, but I can see how it would be very useful for mobile broadband and dialup)
I've only been using it for a couple of hours this evening, but it's well worth a look;

Little bump for Opera.
I've been using it for a couple of days now and it really does have some nice features and is light and snappy. I'm not a browser fanboy, but this one is really worth a look. Opera doesn't seem to get much of a mention in the browser wars!

Rather than start another browser thread (as there's a lot happening in browser-land these days), I'll tag this onto the end.
Google Chrome for Mac has just been released. I'm not near my Mac right now to try it out. But if anyone is interested, here's the link;

Thanks for that. I just downloaded and honestly am thoroughly surprised at how quickly things load. |

| Thanks for the heads up. The turbo feature alone makes it worthwhile for use on my slow dial-up connection, especially while viewing DPC. However, it is not rendering the front page of DPC correctly (some css attributes aren't recognized) and it has problems with password protected directories on my server. I'm using an older version of OSX (10.4). It still needs some work before I could use it to replace Firefox. Shows a lot of promise. |

I've been using Opera 10.10 for a week now, and I've discovered one of it's most useful features; Opera Link.
What this does is upload your bookmarks, history, notes, favorites etc. to the opera server. Then when you connect using any other device, it synchronises your browsers.
For example, if I'm browsing on my Mac and add a bookmark and then go into Opera Mini on my mobile phone, the bookmark appears there as well! - This keeps bookmarks in synch across the different PCs, laptops, phones etc. that I use.
I should be getting commission from Opera by now.... :) |

I just downloaded it...I can't seem to tame the Firefox memory leak beast. And since I have a lot of memory, certain programs like Firefox seem to think they're entitled to more than their fair share. Even after trying a memory recovery utility, unloading most of my extensions, changing the settings to minimize Firefox's caching of history, Firefox still continues to keep leaking memory until it's got 600-700MB of my working set. Add to that trying to run Lightroom, which does pretty much the same thing except to the tune of 1.5 to 2.5 GB (I have 6GB memory), it becomes a problem to launch PS CS4 (yes, I do have other things running all the time too; that's why I have so much memory). But no other program hogs it like Firefox and Lightroom.
So I'm giving Opera a try. I only have had it open for a few minutes, and I only have two tabs open so far, but I like the 112 MB footprint for starters! |
