OK, I did try the search but didn't quite find the information I was looking for. From what I gather, thin filter glass helps prevent vignetting, correct? Now, does this also apply to specialized filters such as polarizers, as well? I want to buy a circular polarizer for my 24-70 Canon lens and I already have a Canon UV/Haze filter (thin cut) on the lens. Should I also buy a thin cut circular polarizer? The price difference between a thin cut and regular cut filter is huge ($172.50 vs $76.50 from B&H). The thin cut filter is also Hoya's S-HMC glass vs plain uncoated.

Most (not all) of the thin filters lack front threads, so stacking them is not possible. If you need to stack, be careful of this.
You should not need a thin filter for 24mm, even on a full-frame camera, certainly not on the 10D.

Ahh, thanks for the info! I don't see the need to stack filters at the moment but maybe in the future as I gain new skills. If I used a circular polarizer, I'd just use that and that alone and swap filters as needed. Not sure what affect both the UV/Haze and circular polarizer would have but I'd like to try it just for the heck of it.

B&H has a Hoya circular polarizer with HMC coatings for $155.95 which is a sort of happy medium price between the uncoated and S-HMC thin cut filter. Other than Hoya, should I consider other brands of filter? I've been quite happy with Hoya filters and the Canon UV/Haze filter is my first non-Hoya filter I've purchased.

Believe it or not, I got a great polarizer for $20 from Ritz camera store a few years ago. I know its' an off brand, but it's a great polarizer. It's thick, circular and works with with my UF filter on the lens, which I almost always leave on for protection of my lens.

Try ebay. I got some great, new filters there for pretty cheap. BH is great, but it's not always the cheapest.

FYI: Filter Connection is having a 20% off sale for Memorial Day; you can get Hoya's top-of-the-line 77mm Super HMC Pro-1 Circular Polarizer for $155... and remember, not all filters are created equal =]

I have a thin B&H one that I use on my 17-40 lens. Works great. No vignetting.

I use Heliopan filters (double- or multi-coated Zeiss glass woth anodized brass threads, life-time warranty, slim or threaded). Rotation is precise and tight.

That's it, mine is a quantaray! :) Yeah, it's cheap enough to try and see how it works. I love my Circular Polarizer from Ritz!!!

Thanks for the tip on the filter connection, EddyG. I just ordered a 77mm Hoya S-HMC Pro-1 circular and hope to have it in a few days.

Because linear polarizers mess up the auto-focus mechanism on most AF cameras. I remember reading about a Sony camera that could use linear polarizers, but that is definitely not the norm.

You're welcome Greg. (I have the exact same polarizer, but I didn't get 20% off!! =)
