Yesterday (in Rhode Island) we had the first warm sunny day after about three days of damp, miserable, cold. What was I doing? In the morning I scouted the thrift store for still-life goodies and made a brief trip to Home Depot and the adjacent Stop & Shop for lighting and flowers, respectively.
I spent the rest of the afternoon in my hot basement living room working with makeshift lighting and backdrops. I just can't believe it is pouring rain just a day later. I shouldn't be surprised when I've lived in this area my whole life with the exception of 2 1/2 years my family lived in Arkansas when I was a kid. We have a saying in Rhode Island (I think I've heard it used regarding other areas of North America also), "If you don't like the weather, wait 20 minutes."

I went out with my digital camera and my 35mm and took some pictures of puddles and passing cars. The digital ones were disappointing. I upped the contrast, with the camera set to ISO 100. All the images turned out noisy; a problem I've been experiencing lately that I never had before. I'm wondering if it is the upped contrast (I never really paid attention to those settings in the past) or if my camera is just getting tired.

I'll admit, I was happy to be shooting with my old Minolta xG1. I forgot to advance the shutter after the first shot, it's been so long! It also felt so heavy. I never really how much I missed that noisy shutter release (it's really noisy!).

Any one have some good rainy day shots they can share?

Golden Gate Bridge is in the background.

Usually upping the EV will help when taking shots in foggy weather as I learned after this one. The warming filter also helps :)

My camera don't gots none of that....Well, I can up the EV actually. I have default setting, ISO 100, and +1 and +2. I don't have any that let you stop down however. I also don't have a warming filter or any filters for that matter. I can adjust white balance with pre-sets or set my own. I like the your shot. I visited San Francisco when I was near my 12th birthday. Loved it! We have a good friend who lives there now and we would love to visit him someday. In some ways, Providence is not unlike SF in terms of beautiful Painted Ladies, amazing restaurants, diverse culture, the more than occasionally rainy day....;D.

My husband was there playing a festival with his band about five or six years ago and has a classic photo disaster story. He is not a photographer and had rarely used my simple Minolta xG1. I showed him how to load the film and gave him a few pointers about the light meter and sent him on his way. He spent an afternoon happily clicking away. One of his favorite subjects was a big maze (you probably no what I"m referring to). Unfortunately, the film never caught on the sprockets and he wasn't getting any shots. He did wonder why he was getting so many extra shots from his roll of film though! LOL!

That's okay! I'm sure we'll be getting some of that soon enough. I wouldn't mind a little of the sunshine, though. ;-)

Oh Lord, not yet! That constant whirring sound drives me batty. I love finding their discarded exoskeletons though. Do you arleady have cicadas? We don't get hear them in Rhode Island until late summer. I think one of the reasons I dislike that sound so much is it heralds the end of summer. I still have an instinctive nervouse gut reaction to the start of the school season even though I've been out of school since I graduated high school in 1985 (not counting the occasional forays into college).

I'd bracket under the conditions prevalent in the shot you posted. The dark side of the rock, really, is too far away to benefit from fill-flash too. Your capture would benefit from increased contrast but more than likely at the expense of noise in those darker areas. Fog can be very tricky to expose properly too. You may wish to overexpose by a full stop to compensate for the usual faulty camera reading of light reflected by fog.

Bracketing is what I would recommend. Comparing the three resulting exposures can be very useful, even if don't end up with a useable shot.
