I'd like to setup an audio system in my place, where I could plug an iPod into a dock (preferably one that would charge it as it played) and then transmit to wireless speakers in other rooms. If the dock had built-in speakers, that'd be good; I'd like to leave it in my living room, and put speakers in three other rooms.

I've looked around at Amazon, B&H, and J&R, and mostly I've just managed to confuse myself. In the past, I've never owned audio gear more complex than a CD player. So I'd appreciate any suggestions you guys might have. I'd like to keep the cost down - I certainly don't need top of the line stuff. It'd be great if it was a system where I could buy the base and a speaker, and then add other speakers as I go.

Any ideas?

i'd look at the apple store. or call a local one.

a lot of the newer receivers have ipod inputs - or are ipod compatible.

if you're planning on getting an HDTV, or any kind of home theater set up - it might be good to start with a decent amplifier/receiver that supports ipods and go from there.

i know there are wireless set ups. but have no idea what they cost.

we 'had' an apple TV but lightning beat it up. itunes streamed from the PC wireless and apple TV was attached to our amp/receiver.

Well you've probably seen this, but it looks like it fits the bill:

Thanks guys. nshapiro, I looked at one of their units on Amazon and it did look cool, but had lukewarm reviews. I'll check and see if any of their others are maybe better.

soup, I never even though of checking with Apple - I suppose that would have been a logical starting point!

If your serious about your music I would give the Eos system a miss. It is way underpowered and expensive as well for what you get.
Whilst we all like the appeal of wireless systems you still have to have power to them, so dont think you can go sticking speakers on walls without wires. If you are still keen on wireless systems then they are out there but to get anything decent you need to pay $$$$.
Dont know what these are like but showing them as an example Wireless music systems

Agree with soup - If you want to do this right and have decent music reproduction you should be looking at a some sort of AV Receiver to be at the heart of your system, as has been said the majority come with iPod inputs or you can do what I do and use the iPod through a usb on the receiver.

Or you could stream your music from your PC or Xbox via wireless or Power over ethernet (PoE) Power over Ethernet

Lots of options for you to ponder, it all depends on what your budget is.

Just to add that Audio/Hi-Fi can be as addictive as Cameras.....and even more expensive in some cases ! So beware you do not get the Hi-Fi bug !

Wow - I can see how it could become an expensive addiction! I appreciate the help, and thank you all. Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately), I'm realizing that this isn't as simple as I'd first thought. I think I'll stick with moving a set of computer speakers from room to room - not as cool as wireless transmissions, but definitely cheaper!
