Right, gotcha. I didn't mean to imply you were being inconsistent or hypocritical or anything. I just wanted to make the point, which the spaz has underscored in response, that his issue is, the ONLY time we're talking about this particular (or most other) train(s) is when they go off the track. And I was trying to address why that's so.

Interesting read linked by JH on gossip as "social grooming"...

I get it.. No one knows that 6 members of my family went to college on golf scholarships, my husband makes golf clubs, golfs all the time along with EVERY person in my family..(except me, I have no athletic ability if my life depended on it).. So, it is true in saying that Tiger is very loved in our house as a sportsman, and we watch & talk golf literally every day... It's actually not healthy.. LOL.. And, howcome I wasn't considering what I was saying as much "gossip" as reporting the latest news reports.. LOL... maybe that's me trying to minimize my role on that gossip train..

Some things never cease to amaze me. I believe this thread was created because the press was reporting that Tiger had been in an accident and details were sketchy as to his status. I for one being a Tiger supporter was very interested in his well-being and the well-being of his family. After following the story and finding out that the reason Tiger was being so evasive with police was because he was hiding not one, not two, but allegedly three affairs was a little disappointing. Maybe it's unhealthy to take pot-shots at someone when they are down.. but the fact of the matter is, Tiger is in the public eye because of his amazing accomplishments.. so because he is an exemplary athlete should that shield him from the public's attention when he screws up? I think not. It may not be fair that his dirty laundry is aired, but IMO maybe he should have been doing his laundry at home.

It's entertaining.

Why? What's entertaining about another person's difficulties in their life?

wow.. so, we can't discuss the current affairs of our favorite sports stars.. I mean, we would be discussing Tiger right now if he just played the most amazing 18 holes.. if he just broke another golfing record..At least, I would.. Just because right now, the topic is unpleasant, doesn't mean we ALL have to pretend it's not happening and put tape over our mouths and not talk about it.. If it makes you uncomfortable, you certainly don't have to participate, but don't misunderstand.. I talk about Tiger all the time, not just right now..

How many threads on DPC have been created to highlight Tiger's achievements, charitable acts, and the good things he's done?

I never said you can't gossip, just that I don't really see the entertainment value in another person's difficulties. You've just taken offense, without really addressing my question.

I'm not sure where you or Bear got from my message that I even indicated that I spend my time talking about Tiger ON THIS SITE.. Obviously, it doesn't happen very often...And, I can only speak for myself.. For me, the thread was created, the topic had been discussed and I was included, there was an update in the story, so I posted it... It's not as glamorous as maybe some think, but that really was the jist of it... I wasn't taken offense to what you said, I was taken aback.. I was surprised although, I shouldn't be...
I guess my question is, why when there is a subject someone doesn't care for in these forums, do they feel the need to question the people taking part in it, and then try to play that off as "they're just wondering" or this is some new scientific study they are conducting on human behavior.. As much as you wonder why we're bothering to talk about Tiger, I wonder why you're bothering to talk about this when it's clearly a subject you want no part in.. My point to you when I responded before was, we're just talking..My tone, although it can't be heard wasn't one of offense, I was being playful and not offended at all.. Can't people just talk & there not be a deep rooted, biblical or mythical, scientific or homeopathic or evil reason behind it.. ? Just wondering !!! :-)

There's a reason for EVERYTHING people do, including idle chatter, even if they don't know they have a reason. It's not just this thread, but all the others like it and all the "breaking news" from everywhere else. For that matter, what makes gossiping about Tiger and his troubles a more relevant topic for discussion here than wondering why people would want to gossip about Tiger?

Public scrutiny is the price of fame. Tiger is purportedly the first billion dollar athlete, but nobody's perfect and the higher your pedestal, the greater the fall if you slip. An accident or single indiscretion might be met with an outpouring of sympathy, but this apparently went on for years and Tiger had to know it would come out eventually. I don't envy the mockery and contempt he now faces, however he earned it just as surely as any PGA win. If you can't take the heat, then stay in your own well-appointed kitchen.

The repercussions go well beyond Tiger's family, too. I heard in passing this morning that Sports Illustrated just finished a kids' pop-up book of sports heros, and of course Woods is prominently featured. Now they, along with many other sponsors, have a major marketing/PR problem.

After thinking about this, I believe I discovered my reason... Tiger carries himself with an air of confidence and a little bit of "I'm better then you" attitude wherever he goes... He demands perfection on the golf course.. In fact, he even demands it from everyone around him including spectators & reporters and photographers.. Tiger has gone well beyond ANY other golfer on multiple occasions to humiliate a fan when that fan does something Tiger doesn't like...

Now, for once in his life, the tables have turned and he's the one on the hot seat.. He's for the first time in his life, not the one demanding anything, not the one forcing anyone to conform to his ideals and wants, he's at the mercy of what EVERY single outlet and human being around him has been at his entire life.. It's well documented that Tiger has always skirted the rules.. In fact, so much so, the rules simply change when Tiger demands they change.. He has been officially fined on the course and then publicly admitted with arrogance that he's just not going to pay it.. And, what recourse does any organization have against the ALL MIGHTY TIGER WOODS.. shesh, none..

So, maybe for once in his life, he's actually getting a dose of reality.. Maybe for once he's being held responsible for his behavior.. And, that is what I am enjoying.. Certainly not the horrible pain I can guarantee you his wife is feeling right now.. In fact, the more I think about it, she is the only one I feel any sympathy for in this case..Not an ounce of it for Tiger... And, maybe this is just a women to women/wife to wife type scenario that I can't explain to you.. I'm pissed that he has humiliated HER like this.. Especially since he has had such huge tissy fits over images of her being published, you would think that he was her protector and guardian from EVERYTHING... When it turns out, HE'S the one who's driven the knife through her heart.. And, I don't need to know their personal relationship to know that when a husband doesn't just have a one night stand with someone, but a 31 month long love affair, belive me, she's crushed right now.. So, I guess I will "gossip" about Tiger because maybe I'm a little pissed at him and you or anyone else may not feel I have that right, but I can't help it..
I guess this is also part of human behavior??? lol.. And, from now on, don't go making me think about my feelings and why I'm talking about this or the other.. Now, I'm really pissed at him and I didn't even realize it.. ;-/

Eeeeeeeeeeeew...

For me, its not a matter of getting all riled up because someone "I look up to and admire" has an affair. I's about the fact that it makes me so sad when ANYONE, famous or not, takes their commitments to someone they love and have committed the rest of their lives to so lightly -- and makes choices that cause so much pain and rejection in their lives. Not to mention what it does to their innocent children when it comes out and everything that makes them secure is in shambles.

Shame on you, Tiger Woods. . . literally!

P.S. And well-said, by the way kandykarml

It's worth remembering that Tiger's father, early on, actually publicly touted him as the next messiah, basically. Can anyone dig up that reference? It was quite stunning, got a lot of press...

How the hell does any child read this and think, oh yeahhhhh.. I got this.. No problem dad... um, did you need me to take out the trash too ???? WTH... what an impossible expectation to live up to regardless of anything.... That's just scary.

Perhaps, but you'd think he could at least manage the more mundane expectation of keeping his OWN promises?

Exactly... What's happened is no surprise to any student of psychology...

I'm just thinking out loud here, but when did his dad pass away...? Did all the women come into Tigers life after Earl was gone..? Is this an example of him being held under such incredible constraints by his father, that after he's gone, he's simply going crazy with his freedom...

I was also thinking, his daughter will be going to school and in a few short years, there will be parents saying to eachother, my kid goes to school with Tiger's kid, remember when he got caught having ALL THOSE AFFAIRS, AT THE SAME TIME... I sure hope no 8 year olds go to school to inform his daughter of daddys oopsies off the course, and then she goes on the internet to see what the heck they were talking about.. Obviously, the kids will someday find out, but I do hope it's when they are old enough to handle this a little better..

Heck. A billionaire with a few problems. He'll come out smelling like a rose. Just look how well Elliot Spitzer came out.

'Spitzer participated in a panel about "policing Wall Street." It was part of the school's public series exploring "ethical issues in public life."'

The "pop" public has a very short memory. If Spitzer can be on a panel concerning ethics, who knows how far Tiger might rise in a few years.

(apologies for quoting the Huffington post but I thought it might tweak a few curmudgeons in here.) :P

Whoa a pro athlete stepped out on his wife? I don't believe it! Next thing you are going to tell me that one was operating a dog fighting ring. Get a load of these guys.

A pro athlete getting some on the side is as likely as a football player going to a club in NYC and shooting himself in the leg! Just totally mind blowing.

Hell, its even less likely to happen then that same football player getting 2 years in jail, while this other football player gets 30 days for vehicular manslaughter!

On a serious note, Derek Jeter has proven himself to be the smartest athlete ever. dudes a stud, and knows it. Hes not getting married until the party train comes to a complete stop.

Look honey. I love you and I will certainly try to forgive you. Lets see a counselor because our family is the most important thing here. I am hurt but hopefully we will somehow get through this.

Oh yeah, lets rewrite that prenup, k?

I love how you wrote this in the text of Elin speaking... Somehow though, I think the conversation is going a little more like this..

Honey, I know I screwed up.. I still love you.. Do you think you can ever forgive me ??? You want to try, THANK YOU !!! Now, my agents and attorneys have advised me to renegotiate our pre-nup.. This way, when you DO divorce me in a few years after you've come to your senses and decide to write that tell all book, I'll have already given you WAY more money then any book deal and request you sign a confidentiality agreement saying you won't ever talk about WHAT I DID to anyone...

LOL.... I really don't think the first thought in her mind was redoing the pre-nup.. I do strongly believe it's the only bargaining chip he's got..

You're right. The first thing on her mind was going redneck and taking a golf club to his cheating hiney. Second came the cash.

I had heard on a radio talk show that Tiger is missing a tooth. I don't know if it was because of the accident or because of a golf club.
