I made the leap and ordered the sigma 70-200 f/2.8 yesterday. With the sensor size of my oly that will put it at 140-400mm. I was wondering if anyone else shoots this lens and what their thoughts were.

I have the Canon version, and although I'm trying to sell mine, it is a great lens. Well built, sharp, fast - great for events/sports and portraits. However, without built-in stabilization, it is hard to use in lower lights, since the shutter speed falls off and camera shake becomes an issue.
(That's part of the reason I'm selling mine - the other part being that I just don't use it much anymore.)

He-he. Don't you think you should have asked that question BEFORE placing your order? :-D
BTW - I have this lens and I'm very satisfied with it. Fast, quiet, sharp (sharp enough for me anyway). I'm not into all the technical +/-'s ... |

I have this lens and I use it all the time. The only thing I wish it had was vibration reduction.

Thanks for the info. My camera has the built in image stabilization and it seems to work pretty well. I have a couple of friends that have used this lens and were satisfied with it, so I thought I would give it try.
Thanks again,

I love my 70-200! I use it pretty much all the time. I'm maybe not the most skilled person with it but;
1. It does have reach (even the Nikon has a 1.5 crop factor) I get about 100-300mm
2. It's a fast lens (f/2.8 fast)
3. Cheaper than the name brand version that does mostly the same thing. $600-700 vs $1,600
4. It's a fast lens ( did I say that already?!) |

Love this lens , suoer sharp , the minimum focusing distance is very useful, excellent handling. no complaints and I have no regrets not having the nikon equivalents. I have compared the Sigma to the Nikon 70-200 & the 80-200. The Sigma is more than comparable in the real world. |

Pro's of the lens..F2.8, Price, decent build.
Con's AF speed slower then the Canon/Nikon version of the lens.
Plus for you its smaller and lighter then the 4/3 55-200 and its also a constant 2.8 compared to the Oly.

| Yep, great lens as said above, sharp, fast, good build, price etc. I use the DG version for Nikon. Means I stand a little further back as 2nd shooter at functions but I prefer the impromptu results I then get with it because I am not as visible to my subject(s). HSM/OS would have been nice but adds bulk and weight to an already big lens. Whilst it's not a typical portrait lens, the 70mm (105mm in x1.5) is perfect but may get heavy if doing a long session. The 200mm (300mm in x1.5) is also great for nature photography all at f/2.8 |

Fantastic lens - especially for the price. I don't deny that IS/OS/VR would be nice, but then the price would go up too... and the weight. You will see plenty of shots taken with this lens in my challenge entries.
As for it's utility in low light... I took a stack of shots from a boat on a night trip up a river in Borneo, almost all at 200mm, all handheld and got some great keepers. The lens works just fine in low light (within the technical limitations of any lens).
edited to add: ref the post above, this is an HSM lens - HSM II now in fact. Focus is very fast, and very quiet.
