Black Friday is a term for the Friday after Thanksgiving in the United States, which is the beginning of the traditional Christmas shopping season. The term dates back to at least 1966, although its usage was primarily on the East coast. The term has become more common in other parts of the country since 2000. Because Thanksgiving falls on the fourth Thursday in November in the United States, Black Friday occurs between the 23rd and the 29th of November.

Black Friday is not an official holiday, but many employees have the day off (with the exceptions of those employed in retailing and banking), which increases the number of potential shoppers. Retailers often decorate for the Christmas and holiday season weeks beforehand. Many retailers open extremely early, with most of the retailers typically opening at 5AM or even earlier. Some of the larger retailers (depending on the location) such as Sears, Best Buy, Macy's and Walmart have been reported to open as early as midnight on the start of Black Friday in localized areas and remain open for 24 hours throughout the day until midnight the following Saturday. Upon opening, retailers offer doorbuster deals and loss leaders to draw people to their stores. Although Black Friday, as the first shopping day after Thanksgiving, has served as the unofficial beginning of the Christmas season at least since the start of the modern Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in 1924, the term "Black Friday" has been traced back only to the 1960s.

The term "Black Friday" originated in Philadelphia in reference to the heavy traffic on that day (see Origin of the name "Black Friday" below). More recently, merchants and the media have used it instead to refer to the beginning of the period in which retailers go from being in the red (i.e., posting a loss on the books) to being in the black (i.e., turning a profit).

Does anyone know why they call it "Black Friday"? I do but just wondered if anyone else did.

Somebody paid me to do that for the PS3. I was out there for two nights all set up with my sleeping bag, and didn't have to pay for my food. We set up an xbox and tv and vcr and ran it through our car with a DC inverter. It was hilarious.
We told everybody that went by asking us what we were doing that we were waiting for Mariah Carey's new album, Glitter. Funny thing is, they seemed to believe us...
I've only actually done the whole Black Friday thing once, and it really wasn't that bad. I didn't get up insanely early though, but I still got some super cheap clothes and there wasn't really a huge wait or anything.

It's supposedly the point in the year during which businesses transition from being in the red to in the black. Meaning, they start making a profit.

You are correct. The 4th quarter comprises of 50% of most store yearly sales. Also know as the Golden Quarter. And most people can't believe that stores after Christmas, December 26th trough 31st also make up a good portion of the forth quarter sales. Thus that week is sometimes called the 13th month.

It's sorta crazy that that's true. It also makes me wonder how huge of an impact Buy Nothing Day could potentially have.

I did the Black Friday thing twice, The first time I got a cheap DVD player and some Speakers. The second time I went and stood in one of two lines at the local walmart to get a TV for my mom for xmas. All was well I was the 4th person in line and knew i wouldnt have a problem getting the TV, But when I got back to the Electronics Department i found my mom standing there waiting for a walmart employee to haul one of the tv's I was planning on buying for her up to the check out. By the time i figured that I should buy something else so the waiting in line wasnt a waste of time. All the good stuff was cleared out. Afterwards I spent 30 minutes trying to get out of the parking lot which was gridlocked. Since then I do my Black Friday shopping online.

I like to go out on Thursday night. There's only a few stores open, but rarely any people in them and many of the stores already have their sales on. (Though not the doorbusters).

A lot of the stores are doing the "doorbuster" sales on-line right now.

www.blackfriday.info also has a lot of the ads already posted

On the other hand, the day after Thanksgiving is also Buy Nothing Day, which will save you more money than the best "doorbuster" deal around.

I noticed that Best Buy is calling it Green Friday. I will not go out, and I don't go out after Christmas either.

I got mine on launch day by sitting outside a walmart at 2:30am in December, waiting for them to open at 8 or 9.

not exactly black friday related - but christmas eve is similar.

my moms amplifier burned up from a brown out the day before christmas eve - and i got the duty of going to best buy the next morning to buy a replacement. easy enough, i also picked up a couple nice APC's to help avoid the same thing happening again. while i was there i was looking at the piles and piles of xbox 360's and PS3s they had all over, and thinking about getting an xbox. NO Wii's to be seen. i saw this one guy near the register with a Wii, so i went and asked one of the sale people if they were out ( my brother had been trying to fond one for some time ).

the guy i spoke with said - in a quiet voice - " yeah we have Wii's, we're just not putting them out on the floor. You want one ? You want and accesories with it ?"

i said - yeah i want one. so he says, alright - takes my name, writes me a note, and tells me to go to a special line at the front of the store. then says when they call your name go to aisle 3. when i got to the checkout some person checked my note against my liscense, and the slip the sales guy had given to them with the Wii.

I asked they triple bag it, because a few days before someone had gotten mugged in the parking lot for the customers Wii. i also walked really fast back to the car. had about $1500 worth of electronics in my cart :)
