Just so this post doesn't die, can I ask whether this has been considered for implementation? I would love to develop a little system tray application that could consume an RSS feed to keep me aprised of image scores/comments.
RSS would be nice for People's Portfolios similar to what Flickr does with it's "photostream".
Also RSS for forums and the challenges would be very handy.
This site runs on phpBB and there is RSS support in phpBB, it should be a matter of some sort of configuration.
Portfolio image
- comments
- choosen as favorite image
Profile
- choosen as favorite photographer
Favorites
- images added to favorite photographers portfolio
- images added to favorite photographers prints
- comments added to favorite photographs
- print made available for favorite photograph
There are probably many more tidbits of information that would be nice to have on a notification basis.
If I understand this correctly, I wouldn't use this often, but I certainly would use it. Vacation times, when I have no computer but I have my husband's Blackberry, would be much easier. (Three times I've had to call my sisters & have them look up the new challenge.)

We are not running phpBB.

I am still very interested in doing this and think that this is a good start, but what amount of information are you thinking of for the following sections:
Portfolio image
Profile
Favorites
Just counts or the last 10 of each or what? I think including a list of everything would make the RSS feed massive and also pointless.
I don't think it would take much to provide your current scores via RSS, but I don't think they will be on demand.

Actually, just the most recent -- anything that had been pulled from the feed could be removed. I was thinking what information would be needed to feed a tray applet (I'll find an existing one or write it, either way) to notify me when I received comments, or when a favorite photographer has posted a new photo to their portfolio and such. Once the applet had pulled the information it would be fine to remove it from the feed.
I've considered writing a spider to pull this information from the site on a regular basis -- but since the TOS frowns upon automating the site, I thought it best not to.

Sorry, it looks very like phpBB

I think the following 'personal' feeds would be interesting:
Portfolio - Rss feed of last 10 additions
Challenge - RSS feed of current/previous entries and their current status
For the portfolio feed, the RSS feed should look something like
Image.x [CDATA[
//www.dpchallenge.com/image.php?IMAGE_ID=236612
and for the challenge feed:
Challenge Title Submission Title
Definitely would like an RSS feed for "active challenges for submission". Not so much concerned with those for voting, etc. Though maybe it'd be a good idea to have three seperate public feeds:
Public:
Challenges (Active)
Challenges (In Voting)
Challenges (Ribbons)
Bump. Is this still in the works or did it just kind of die? I think it would be neat to see my challenge scores BUT I think it would be EVEN BETTER to get an RSS feed for my favorite photographers portfolio.
On each portfolio page there would be a link to the photographers RSS feed. It would contain the last 10 images submitted to the photographers portfolio. Any decent feed reader will be able to handle removing entries that you have already seen so no need to get fancy. Just the last 10 entries submitted by this photographer.
The RSS feed itself would contain the following data:
Image Title
Image Thumbnail
The description of the picture by the author.
If any more information is wanted you can click the article title in your rss reader and be taken to the image page on dpchallenge.com.
Please let me know if you would like any more information on the ideas I have for the portfolio RSS feed.
I know I've heard the site admins are working on some significant upgrades for DPCPrints, with upgrades to the site on the horizon too. My own guess would be that RSS is not high on the list though. I use RSS for a few different news sites to easily keep up with stuff, but I have a hard time seeing how it would fit into the DPC world.

The most usefull thing I can see is that there are a couple of photographers on the site that I love. Every picture they add to their portfolio I am very interested in seeing. But right now I have to go to each photographer and check their portfolio myself. Not a big deal but it would be really nice to be able to see their latest portfolio entries in my news reader every morning.
I'm sure that there are a ton of other things that the developers are working on that are more important than this but it would still be awesome to have.

Haha, WAP is pretty fun to write -- but does anyone actually ever their phone to check the web?
As far as security issues, we'd generate a URL with a hash value in it. Then the only security issue is giving our your URL..
I've got a 6700 PDA. And I can browse the DPChallenge site itself. Sadly, the navigation doesn't work in the browser. But other than that it's pretty nice. And when I am in the NY/CT area I can get 500k+ download speeds.
