I heard about this yesterday. Ironically, my church (very, very small church) is actually doing something similar Saturday. We are located in a primarily low-income area of the county. We mailed out postcards and some went door to door inviting the community to come to the church for a free family portrait.
No strings attached. Nothing to buy. They will be given free prints and a CD with the images on them.
We'll see what happens. . .

wow what a great idea! We have been looking for something to do for this holiday and we are looking at working with the local Childrens Home. This may work for that.
wanted to add.... anyone in the Little Rock area wanna team up for something like this?

I sorta think that it sucks that you can't use this stuff at all, even in a reasonable context......what they told us at the one that was done here was that all the images were to be deleted on site, and that no promotion was to be done.
I ended up working with a local church instead that did a similar thing as an outreach program......they did a breakfast and portrait thing, and there were standard release forms. The people that were okay with it had their pics in the paper and the church newsletter, and the people that asked not to be used were not.
It's a beautiful concept, and something that anyone who's a photog ought to do every now and then for a reality check. Many of the families that we shot at the church had not had a Christmas portrait done in years, or ever, and the feelings of goodwill were rampant amongst everyone.
It was a beautiful day, and we'll be doing it again in the spring.
So....grab a couple people, a laptop and a printer, take a sheet and some thumbtacks for a backdrop, and do it M.A.S.H. style.......simple, quick, & efficient, and watch the smiles come.
ETA: Nice vid, BTW......hopefully it was sanctioned and it could be re-posted. They had to get the images on the site somewhere, but I'm guessing that they were either professional models, or the promotional images were shot specifically for that purpose.
