So a bit ago, we were asked if we have fotog projects beyond snappin' a few for the challenges here. I have very pleased in my own project that has to do with taking portraits of all the people in my universe. I would love to get some feedback as I have many more to take. Please check 'em out HERE!
Either hit me back here or leave a comment in the gallery. I ma really trying to improve my portraits & come up with some different ideas for taking them so comments & constructive criticism is something I am thirsty for as I look to shoot some more this weekend!
Thanks much in advance.
Peace
The Rooster!

Hi Rooster...I went through all the shots and what strikes me most about them is that they have issues with lighting. The ones taken outside looks like they were taken in harsh lighting conditions and some, such as Isabel's and Wanda's, have a hard shadow going across their faces. Ana's face appears too dark while the background is too bright. I realize they are candid shots, but maybe try positioning your subjects so they are either all in shade of all in sun and then exposing based on a meter reading of their skin tones. In harsh conditions like that where the contrast will exceed the exposure latitude of the cmos chip you have to make a choice as to whether there will be detail in the shadows or highlights. Also, using fill flash would have helped alot in those outdoor shots.

For your indoor shots, where you used flash I think you overpowered your subject with a bit too much light, such as with, Nono's and Frida's pictures. Also, the backgrounds are too dark where you used flash. How fast of a shutter speed were you using? Also, Nono's picture has a band going down the left side of the image and I"m wondering if there was a sync problem there.

Hope this was helpful and not too critical...

Hey O,

thanks so much taking the time to break it down to me. It is very helpful. I guess my attempt for shadows as a dramatic effect is not working. I kinda like the shadows but it is important that a mood is getting across to flks which it seems it is not.
I will take you advice as I take more shots this weekend. Thank you SO much!
BTW, any advice on a good fill flash?

I don't think the shadow on Wanda is too bad (if you're going for drama), but you want to try and avoid shadows that break the face into parts, like on Isabel's photo. For good (and cheap) fill light, I've used a piece of aluminum foil for a long time. Fold it about four layers thick so it's a nice big stiff sheet, then crumple, then uncrumple. It will add diffuse light to take those shadows away. If you look hard, you can even find it in gold color, which adds a really nice warm light.
