OK, it's time for one of my famous stupid questions. How does one get all the camping gear from home to Iceland? If I plan to bring enough clothes to last a couple of extra days just in case of rain or whatnot, plus all my camera gear and my laptop, where will I put my sleeping bag etc? I know I've seen folks check in frame backpacks with sleeping bags attached but those are folks that are dedicated to sleeping outdoors and almost no other purpose. Has anyone else wondered about this? The last time I spent any extended amount of time outdoors I was about 14 or 15 for school trips. Sorry if I sound stupid since I'm not the regular camping type. :)

Don't worry Akamai, I am putting together a 'how-to' document for this trip. I am making this a pet project of mine with some help from good people. You will definetly have a room for your sleeping bag and other stuff. Especially if we are going to be together on one bus.

Last time I went to Iceland, Franziska Lang and I used these vouchers for sleeping bag accomodations on farms. It worked extremely well, we had a bed to sleep on each night on a different farm. The best part is that it only cost us US $10 a night. Might be worth looking into. Many of the farms had enough room for 12 people, usually 4 to a room.

I'm not worried about once I get to Iceland but more concerned about how to get all my stuff there in the first place. Sleeping bags are bulky items and difficult to transport.

Why? You can take your truck with you :) We can use it :)
Sorry, that you can't come. We'll send you pics from Iceland, and you'll send us pics of your truck? :)
Well, seriously, just come later when you got some $$$ again. You can see what we will have done and re-do that or something different.
Cheers

I think the dates are pretty much decided on 3rd July - 10th July, tho there haven't been any other decisions made AFAICT...

Damn being a poor student ! ... I'll come in about five years when I have a decent paying job and a badass equipment list :P.
Though I think given the family history Norway is first on the list. |

In that case, first Norway and then Iceland makes perfect historical sense.

Would it be possible to edit the OP to include everything that has been decided? So ppl don't have to monitor this constantly.
AFAIK the only thing decided are the dates.
There is a list of ppl who are interested
There are also a few links, a few suggested itineraries and so on.
Three icelandic words you need to know:
já [yow] = yes
skál [scowl] = cheers
Vaðlaheiðarvegavinnuverkamannaskúralyklakippuhringur (yes, that's one word). You need to come here to get the pronounciation and explication.

First I wanted to give a big THANK YOU to all the people who have posted good information about what to expect in Iceland. That has been helpful. If anyone has more tips (food/showers/PUFFIN!/anything I should NOT do) those would be much appriciated.
About two weeks ago I decided that I was going to Iceland. I don't care what stands in my way (looking like not much at this time). I got this same attitude before my Fall trip with my brother from Minnesnowta to Idaho up to Banf Canada. We didn't plan anything (not even the car we were going to take ended up going) other then We have cash, we have credit. One of the best trips ever, including the near death experience. :)
I like birds and landscapes. One of the big reasons for me going on this trip is Puffins.
At this time I will be camping and arive at the island near the end of May or early June. Thinking about 7-10 days. I will be renting a 4WD of some sort. I have a friend who may or may not be coming along, won't know until he gets it cleared with the boss type people.
Let me know if you have a serious intrest and are serious about making the most out of the time that will be spent there. Spliting some of the costs (well even if it is just the cost of the 4WD) would be nice. I am a grad student and they don't really pay me a whole lot. :)
Oh and I am looking to keep it small a total of 2 MAYBE 3 people.

Is there still interest?
The rate of exchange is horrible for you (ISK vs USD) but very nice for us at the moment. Better for EUR and GBP.

I just got on to this thread... There's no way I'm reading the whole thing but I'd be seriously interested going in July (or possibly June if the time has been switched, but I'm gruduating and moving in June). My girlfriend would also probably come with me.
So if this is going to happen and it's under $2,000 for the trip then contact me.

July 3rd to 10th. And it will be over US$2000 for sure. Iceland is the most expensive European place to visit. The flight itself from the east coast to Reykjavik is about US$1000

There's not been many updates about this trip for a long while, and we really need to start thinking about booking flights / accommodation / vehicles etc now, so that we can get the cheapest prices...

We Icelandic DPCer´s should maybe have some kind of a meeting soon to gather information and make some kind of a plan. Any response to that? |

I had no idea Iceland was "the most expensive European place to visit." I looked up plane tickets quickly and it was around $850 from San Franciso for a single person. I'd have to drive there but I could leave early and take photos along the way. After the estimated plane ticket cost, that leaves about $164.28 per day after that, and if we seriously camp it I don't see where all the extra cost would come from.
My dad is military and we can get discounts for vacations in a lot of locations so I can also look into this and see how much I can get a package for.
Even if it's above $2,000 keep me informed through e-mail:
