What are these numbers for? Are these the number of tourists each month per year? Don't forget that in the EU (and other places) the comma is not used to separate thousands (58.374 vs 58,374) and this is assuming those are numbers of tourists.

Don't know if this has been posted yet here but.
If anyone is San Francisco then Icelandair will start flying there next summer.

Looks like a HUGE GROUP, I'll be intersted in knowing who will ACTUALLY make it out to Iceland. :-)

Personally, a group of 12 people would be perfect, that would be 3 4x4 cars, and enough to easily get into a hotel and/or tents. :-) Is 10days what we're planning for? Who can 99,9% say they will join?
I know I will join.

I will be there 100%. More so if we manage to bring the cost down :P

Flights are currently only £135 from the UK (LHR <-> KEF) with IcelandAir, which is pretty reasonable...

ok. I maybe should post some clarifications:
numbers are overnight stays at hotels (and hotels only, double the number for all acc.)
point is to separete thousands

Edit:
so for june 2004 113.136 overnight stays
and for july 2004 150.329

for hotels and guesthouses for 2003 (sorry, couldn't find stats for 2004):

june 2003 183 thousand overnight stays
july 2003 286 thousand

so, a BIG differnce between june and july 2003 (100+ overnight stays)

Well I've sent a group email to everyone who expressed an interest in coming. I will send another one asking people to say whether they are 100% in or not. Remember more than hafl of the people interested are from Iceland...LOL

iceland express have cheap fares from London and Danmark
11/10/2004 01:21:11 PM · #163
Based on the first email from Nick, I think the cost is a bit prohibitive for me and that doesn't even include airfare yet. I just bought a new lens so that's about 1/3 of the Iceland trip right there. I'll probably stay closer to home next year and maybe go somewhere within driving distance like New Mexico or Arizona. Maybe I can join you folks another time. Hope you guys all have a great time and I expect lots of photos!

On the other hand, I'll be in Germany and Copenhagen in a couple of weeks (starting November 20th) if anyone there is interested. I'll be in Düsseldorf next weekend for about a week and then on to Copenhagen for a few days.

Greg, the price I quoted included airfare. And I was being ultra conservative so people would not get caught short, it will probably be a lot less that what I quoted.

I think airfare + say 800-1000USD will get you far. :-) Unless, we do hotel & resturant every night. :-)

Some cost calculations.
First of all, with the Icelanders here, are we going to pitch in and join the costs of jeep hire or does somebody have their own?

Transportation:
1x Big AWD (Toyota Land Cruiser) appx 100 thousand ISK a week from Hertz. Can take 4-5 ppl and good boot. We can probably get it cheeper with a number of them and maybe somebody has a dicount account there. Fuel extra (approx 100+ ISK per litre petrol) and these things are gas guzzlers.
I think 4 ppl per car is max, because everybody will have a lot of gear that they need handy at all time. A smaller jeep (than the T Land Cruiser) will probably be too cramped, even with just 4 ppl.

A trailer (or two, or more) might come in very handy for extra luggage (tents, sleeping bags etc) that just needs transportation between nightstops and can be left behind for serious roughroading to photogenic spots. Have no idea about cost.

Now I don't know how large the group will be, but if we say 20-32 then we need 5 (5x4=20) to 8 (8x4=36) jeeps or costs between 500,000 to 800,000 ISK for that part.

For 25 ppl (or more) a big offroad bus (AWD) might be worthwhile, costs about 600,000 (or about as much as 6 jeeps) ISK for a week (incl. driver + 2500 km) for a 40 seater with plenty of space. With photographic equipment I'd put max 32 ppl in a 40 seater (1.25 seats per person, as 4 in a 5 seater jeep), and then the cost per person really starts to go down.

BUS: 600 thousand ISK all.

10 ppl = 60,000 ISK per person
12 ppl = 50,000
15 ppl = 40,000
20 ppl = 30,000
25 ppl = 24,000
30 ppl = 20,000
32 ppl = 18,750

Jeeps, 100 thousand per unit:
10 ppl (2 jeeps) = 200 000 = 20 000 per person
10 ppl (3 jeeps) = 300 = 30
12 ppl (3 jeeps) = 300 = 24
15 ppl (3 jeeps) = 300 = 20
15 ppl (4 jeeps) = 400 = 27
20 ppl (4 jeeps) = 400 = 20
20 ppl (5 jeeps) = 500 = 25
25 ppl (5 jeeps) = 500 = 20
25 ppl (6 jeeps) = 600 = 24 (but 5x4 + 1x5)
25 ppl (7 jeeps) = 700 = 28 (7x3.5 !)
30 ppl (6 jeeps) = 600 = 20
30 ppl (7 jeeps) = 700 = 23 (5x4 + 2x5)
30 ppl (8 jeeps) = 800 = 27 (8x3.75 !)
32 ppl (7 jeeps) = 700 = 21 (3x4 + 4x5)
32 ppl (8 jeeps) = 800 = 25

so with jeeps the cost per person in 20-30 thousand ISK for the week, with most good fits, i.e. 4 ppl per car, about 25 000)

Milagewise we're likely to do 2000-2500 km (1250-1550 miles) by sticking to road #1 (which is 1336 km/835 miles) most of the time and do some "daytrips" into interior and other interesting places.

Enough for the moment.

at the moment the exchange rate is:
1 USD = 67 ISK
1 GBP = 124 ISK
1 EUR = 87 ISK
1 CAD = 56 ISK

Think a bus is a good idea.

The rent for the jeeps are very expensive besides there are less changes that we will have some serious accidents. There are always some accidents here in the summer where people not used to the situation are driving big car which they are not used to either.

Not even sure we need some powerful offroad bus since regular buses here can go most places and if there are some places where we need something extra we can just buy a short tour to that place.

Transportation:
I don't think we need the biggest SUV's. A smaller car, like Suzuki Vitara or Toyota RAV4 is enough. There are places that we need a decent 4x4 to reach to. (I have been organizing a trip in my head since last summer :)). But I like the bus idea, I think it would be more fun, especially with a large group.
I do think that my brother has a license for a bus, but I have to check.

Dates:
Nothing has been deceded, I suggest middle of July, when all roads have been opened and we have 24hrs. of sunlight. I suggest the week 10-16th of July, just to try to nail down a date.

Accomondation:
I suggest tents. We will be photographing during the night, and sleeping during the day. Or just photographing whenever we have good light. :) There won't be any guest houses or hotels near all the more interesting spots anyway, and they will be packed by tourists.

Itinerary:
Here is what has been brewing in my head last winter/this summer:

Reykjavík -> Ãingvellir -> Gullfoss/Geysir (just for fun) -> Hekla -> Landmannalaugar -> Jökulsárlón -> East Fjords -> Snæfell/Kárahnjúkar -> Askja -> Kverkfjöll -> Gæsavötn -> Veiðivötn -> Reykjavík.

I have to calculate stops and figure out if we have enough time for all these places. I shall try to find photos and draw a map of this route and put somewhere on www.light.is.
NB. This us just an idea/suggestion... This route is a bit of a adventure, we will be crossing rivers and such, so I have to check for water levels during the mornings/evenings.
If anybody has more questions, my msn handle is jonr@vortex.is.
(Gauti, endilega bættu mér við ef þú ert með msn)
I'll put a copy on this on the mailing list.

Have the dates for this trip been decided? I am sooo looking forward to attending, but am only out of school for three weeks in the summer. If this trip falls between June 19 and July 10, I will definately be there.
