Would love to hear from the voters who gave this shot a 1,2 ,or a 3.
I did not get any bad comments during the challenge, just wondering why the grade was so low by some 27 voters.
Curious

Hey Coley,
I love how you take "habit" and interpret it so literally, most people wouldn't , probably why you scored low..that and some people probably didn't know that what nuns wear is referred to as a 'habit'.
It's a good shot and clever.. I would give it a 6.

I agree. I think that the low scores were a result of either a) not knowing that nuns wear a "habit" or b) not thinking that the play on words was right for submission. I actually love the originality of it. I gave a 9. |

I did not vote, but would have probably given it a 5.
It looks way too overprocessed. |

I would've given a "9", but I didn't voted on any of the "habits" entry. I think the humor factor should have raised the scores on this shot. The contrast works perfectly. From the expressions on the face to the placement of the hands. One is still while the other is dynamic, blurring hands add to it.
Something about the smoothness of the picture I don't like. Maybe some sharpness would help. Pictures that are too smooth gives me a feeling of digitally enhanced art. Pretty much the reason that I wouldn't give it a perfect "10". |

I liked this picture with the exception of too much "Neat Imaging" of the skin (or whatever the process).
Concept/composition was great (A row of Nun's Habits was actually one of my initial thoughts on a shot for this comp).

Your right Brad ... I was experimenting with neat image and have since learned how to tone it down a little :) ... part of the learning curve of life.
Thanks to all for your responses

Passed it by several times to reserve my vote until I thought I understood the image better---in the end, I gave it a 6. What bothers me most is the rubbery quality of the black head pieces, especially on the right model (daughter). Perhaps it is because these costumes were meant to be viewed from a distance.
Think you should be happy to hang it in your gallery or anywhere it will be appreciated. |

Coley,
Look at your points distribution curve. It is a fairly normal bell curve with perhaps a couple extra 1s more that might be expected. This is nothing out of the ordinary for such a diverse group as DPC voters.
The extra 1s could be explained as nothing more than people thinking you were making fun of religion. That, of course, has nothing to do with the photographic quality of your image.
Yours is a very good picture and that was confirmed by the voters. You scored over 6 and had an 8th place finish out of 256 entries. There is nothing seriously wrong with it.
Advice: Be happy and don't worry about a couple low scores.

Hi-ho,
I gave it a 5, and I got the habit joke.. :-).
I thought that the lighting was a little flat, and the models are too close to the backdrop, giving the annoying/distracting shadows.
I didn't realise it was candid, which makes it a really neat keeper for the family album.. |

I didn't vote it low however I think that you have to expect a handful of 1s, 2s & 3s any time you enter something to do with religion. Not hard to see how some people would feel you were dissing nuns by using something they hold high as a mere prop in a photo competition. It's just the risk to take when you enter something controversial, or that stretches the topic. My cicada shot in Habits was like that, I knew some would think it was not very good fit for the challenge. I crutched it up with the title and expected some low votes. I got a little curly-Q on the bottom of the bell curve. |

Thanks for the advice Steve ... you are right .. I am extremely happy with the results , as well as all of the comments received :) |

I liked this one and gave it a 9
but as we all use digital why not try a reshoot
assuming you still have the habits and your daughters :)
try less tilt on the the good nuns head
fix the habits to hide the plastic look
closed down the aperture 1 or 2 stops (more DOF) to get all hands and faces into focus
move futher away from the backdrop to stop the shadows
and use less neatimage in post production
then put it up on your wall and sell prints so others can put it on their walls

I know it's completely debatable here, but don't use neatimage. At all. |

I gave this 'only' a 5. Technically I think it's quite good, and I understood the word play right away. However, I didn't like the rubbery look of the clothes and even with different cloth the habits would have looked fake, so I felt you should have staged it better. Didn't know it was candid though, good capture!

Why did you recieve low scores? Because
someone either didn't know that nuns wore habits
or some people are simply horrible at judging photos.
Look at some of the ribbon winners. All of them
recieved 1's and 2's by a few who don't take their voting
seriously enough. You can get a consensus here, but it's
never unanimous.
Personally I would have given it a 9...It
follows the theme well. It's creatively clever in having one nun
conventionally portrayed, and other nun acting
like Avril Lavigne.

Sorry, but I gave it a 9. :) I think it's a great photo, even with the minor imperfections.

I didn't vote, but if I did I would have gave it a 4. I don't care for the neat image effect. The lighting is good, but they are way to close to the background that I am able to see the shadow of the girls. The looks are good. Maybe whiten the teeth a bit on the girl on the right.
Cute costumes for dance. Are they twins?
