I stated that OOB does not do well here, not that it has NO place, and made no personal attack on anyone or the site, indirectly or directly, you read into the statement whatever you wanted to.

Where? In another thread?
You said I've only been here 6 months, am not a paid member, haven't entered many challenges etc etc
Am I thus not qualified to voice an opinion and that I have no photographic skills or enough experience here to voice an opionion about ONE area of the site I feel is not appreciated in general?

I didn't enter the challenge but I decided to take some time and left multiple comments on both ends of the spectrum of my voting. I guess providing a comment suggesting that I don't really see the symmetry in the image was not well received this time round, as only one such commment was marked helpful. Yet all those I left on the 'hey this is cool side' were marked.
Sorry folks...I tried. I guess I will just institute a new policy during challenges....
1. I will leave some comments early during the voting period.
2. If the comments are not marked helpful before the end of voting, I will pull the comments. I don't want people to have comments they don't find helpful.
Cheers all. |

This is something that you shouldn't do. Just continue commenting as you feel better. The issue here is that some people get pissed off about a bad critique on their photos. But either way, they should see that even a non sense critique (not your case) can be helpful. It's helpful for you to learn that your photo may not be passing the intended meaning in the right way for everybody's taste. Then you can leave with that or do something in the next challenge to try to fix anything that you understand is wrong.
For example, if somebody tells me "I did not like this one" on the comments, I will mark it helpful since it was helpful to know that despite of any technical stuff, my photo did not touch that guy.
What I get really pissed off about, is when somebody votes 4 or less and don't tell why. Even telling "I didn't like it" would be better than no comment. This is something that I'd love to have on this site: the requirement to comment or choose from a predefined list of reasons for a low vote.
And BTW, you did not comment on mine, this means it's not on any of your scoring ends, which is still a helpful thing to know... it means, that at least for you, my photo is an average photo, but it can be the best one for someone else and the worse for other guy.

Marcus - I appreciate your input but I have been around here long enough to pick how and when I leave comments. If people don't like them, they don't have to look at them. I appreciate your input and I will be sure to comment on yours after the challenge rolls over. |

Personally I find that it's the comments that point out the areas of weakness that are the most helpful.
If the viewer believes I haven't met the challenge then this is fair enough as it means I failed to communicate in the way I intended
A comment such as "Great Work" is of course very nice to have but doesn't really give me an insight into how the picture may be improved.
So as far as I'm concerned Peter I accept all of your comments with equal enthusiasm.

Me too, but there are people that complain about a comment pointing what is wrong with their pictures.

You know I keep reading this on the forums that people don't like it when you tell them what is wrong with their picture, but for all the harshness and honesty of my comments, I have never had a single complaint about the fact I've commented and I think only about one in every nine aren't marked as helpful!
I don't know what you lot are writing that's upsetting people so much!

Not as bad as I was suspecting. Its not a very OMG WOW.. photo. Though as a car enthusiast, the shot when I found it was a WOW. You don't see those kinds of things every day. |

I just felt I should throw my two cents into this (probably a bad idea) BUT... I have only been on this site as a paying member for about a month now, and I have actually received emails complaining about my voting their photos down (I don't know how they can see what I voted them?) and complaints about me "offering an opinion they weren't interested in".. For those of you who have emailed me, you know how I stand on it, and I do not apologize. This is a photography forum. If you can't handle someone telling you what they think could improve your photo then you are obviously "to good" to be here and you should leave. I happily accept all comments, good and bad, actually.. ESPECIALLY the bad, I want to know what I can improve on.. that's why I am here. I do not post comments that are not constructive, if its not praise on loving the photo, its something constructive on what I think could improve it.

WD on sticking your neck out...now be prepared to have it cut in two :) Oddly I didn't know that it's possible for anyone to see what you voted once your paid up...that would not be very democratic now would it? I think it's probably more them wearing out their update buttons, getting a crappy crit from you and their score plummeting around the same time, thus putting 2 and 2 together. |

That could very much be Magnum, but I stand stead fast with my original statement. I'm ok with people complaining to me, they did it before I said anything and it will continue so I'm ok with that. lol. I don't worry about hurting people's feelings, its a contest, what is the point of scoring a photo hire than it deserves just because you feel bad? That's not the point of a contest. That irritates me just about as much as every team in a league getting a trophy at the end of the season, teaches mediocrity. We are mostly adults on here, I would hope everyone understands at a certain age they stop handing out lolly pops when you cry over a shot... ; ) |

as a member you can hide your name during the voting process, which means they wouldn't know it's you until the voting is over. that also means they can't complain until it's over. :) now go to your preferences. |

Just remember that some people don't look at their challenge scores or comments until the challenge is over (I have been known to do this occasionally), or they're off on a trip or something. Some newbies simply don't know to check the comment box. An unchecked box, particularly in a short period of time, doesn't necessarily mean it's not useful. And, even if the photographer doesn't find it useful, other people viewing the photograph may find it useful. Finally, there's the standard response that your commenting helps YOU the most, and it's worth it for that. |
