Hey,
I'm interested in buying a telephoto lens but not really looking to spend all that much at the moment (still paying off my D70). I was looking through bhphotovideo.com and saw this lens: Nikon Zoom Telephoto AF Zoom Nikkor 70-300mm f/4-5.6G Autofocus Lens - Black. They're selling it for $141AUD (99.95USD converted at //www.xe.com). Now as I'm an Aussie I decided to see what it'd cost if I bought it here. Now here's the thing, on a search, one place was selling it for $815AUD!!!! Now even including postage to Australia this only works out to around $200AUD (~$145 USD). Now are these the same lens?????
Link AUS: //www.maxwell.com.au/photo/nikon/nikkor/af_zoom/70-300_f456ded.html
Link US: //www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=NavBar&A=getItemDetail&Q=&sku=207359&is=GREY&si=acc#goto_itemInfo
I would appreciate if someone could tell me if they are in fact the same. And while I'm asking questions, this will work fully with the D70, including all features right?
Thanks folks, I love this site!!!

EDIT: Ok, on further searching I found out that they may be different in that the Aus one is the ED version and the US one is the not ED version. Now as I'm not that fussed on a really high quality lens this doesn't matter to me. Though my original question stands, are they any different besides this point on quality? (and the question on compatability)
EDIT2: Oh and if the lens won't work, can someone suggest a cheap lens, pref one that will go at least to 300 or more if poss.

Nope, they're different. The G lens is the cheaper version, the ED one has Extra-low dispersion glass and is naturally more expensive.
Wait till you see the constant f/2.8 aperture ones... :P

Hey,
Take a look at this thread. The lens you are talking about is different then the one Pedro is but he addresses your question.

Cheers bud! I'd actually read that one, but as I have the memory of a goldfish I'd forgotten about it. Going to read it again though, looks like though that I might pick up that Nikkor lens. I'm not fussed about a bit of noise (so long as it's not like chainsaw loud :P) so it sounds good at a good price! |

If you want cheap, get the G lens. it's optically indistinguishable from the ED based on my own loose tests, and anything I've readother than what Nikkor puts out.
I talked about them both in this thread. I've had both, and I took both back.
edit to point out my slowness.
