Hey all,

I find that more and more I am shooting wide angle, thinking of investing in one. Current cam is a D40, plan to go D90 within a year, fave lens is the 18-200 mm cause it's so versatile and gives me pretty good w/angle...but I want MORE, dammit!

Suggestions?

The Nikon wide zoom is reportedly very good, but it's also very expensive.

I have the Sigma 10-20; works great and it didn't cost me an arm and a leg.

Like you, I LOVE the 18-200! I have gotten some great results with that lens for portraits, headshots, in dark theatres, and of course outdoors. But for landscapes you do need to go wider, so the Sigma is always in my bag with the 18-200. These are the only two lenses I carry.

I've actually been thinking of going even wider and getting a fisheye, but they are pretty expensive for an occasional use lens.

I've got the Tokina 12-24 which i think is great although the Tokina 11-16 is probably a better buy for not much more money.

I'll second the Sigma 10-20. Besides not costing a fortune, it is a very sharp lens and unless you push it, there is minimal distortion. I generally shoot it between 13-20mm.

I wanted one for quite some time... I ended up getting a Tokina 12-24 on ebay for $325 in mint shape...

I am VERY pleased with it!!!

although, I am considering dumping it and going for a sigma 10-20mm... believe it or not, that 2mm makes a HUGE difference... and I would really benefit from it...

watch out though, I hear that there are many defective Sigma 10-20mm lenses floating around (some center sharpness error or something...)

You have a few choices The Nikon 14-24 2.8 is a dandy lens but the price is huge cheapest I have seen it was around $1500.00 The 10.5 fisheye is a good one too and only cost about half of the price of the 14-24. But has obvious limitations vs the 14-24 also. I am probably not the best person to listen to on this one because I tend to stick to the Nikon glass exclusively and would blow more money then I need to on a lens I wont use often enough to justify the cost. lol I did it with the 17-55 2.8 I haven't taken it out more than 2 times because I always think I will need more range so i usually use my 18-200vr for walk around.

I use the Nikon 12-24 f4 and love it and highly recommend it. I also own an 18-200 but it does not compare to the quality of shots I get from the 12-24. The Nikon 12-24 f4 gives great sharpness and color. It is my landscape lens of choice.

Nikon now makes a 10-24 but it is not a constant aperture and I̢۪m not sure of the reviews on it. If it is as god as the 12-24 then I would say definitely go for the extra 2mm on the wide side.

I'm might be selling my Nikon 12-24. I'm looking for around $800 (not sure, yet)...hardly used, mint condition.

Decent review of the Sigma 10-20 F4-5.6. Thom review
There's also the Sigma 10-20 Constant F3.5 out now that wasn't out when I got my 10-20 (which I love). I don't know anything about this newer one though...

Agree. I have the DX format 12-24 and it is superb. I have used it frequently in my real estate photography and have been very very happy with it. I am thinking of upgrading to an AF wide angle. PM me if you want to discuss a deal on my used lens.
