Forgetting to do the laudry and having to wear dirty clothes would be a habit, but doing the actual laundy isn't.

But the habit depicted here is shaking off the laundry before hanging them to get rid of extra water. You don't really have to do that, you can wring, or just hang dripping, but some lavanderas (laundry women) do that with vigor which is what is superbly illustrated in the photograph.

Great spirits have often encountered violent opposition from weak minds

This site is very often a testimonial to the above quote from Albert Einstein.

It never ceases to amaze me that no matter how well a point is made (as in the above) and no matter how often it is repeated in the same thread, this seems to have little bearing on ensuing posts.

I don't have a weak mind. I am just a mother of 4 with a ton of laundry and don't find it a habit. Maybe it is a Wyoming thang. ;-)

If the dictionary says it is a habit ("Customary manner or practice"), what more do you people want? No one can be expected to read your mind.

Shaking off the laundry may be a habit, but according to the title that was not the habit being depicted. But I still think it's a very good photograph, should have gotten a ribbon.

I agree, the title is unfortunate.

I have a habit of rubbing my forehead, I do it when I'm stressed or tired, and sometimes I rub it vigorously enough to redden my skin. I have never thought “Gee must be time to rub my forehead".

Conversely I have never looked up with a start to realize that I was half way through doing my laundry and hadn't realized I had started. Had this shot been entered in "Chores" or "Housework" challenges it might well have won, I certainly would have given it a few more points. There are always a few excellent shots that people try to shoehorn into applicability, some do better than others.

Ooppss... I didn't know that there is a thread discussing my "habit" entry. Thanks Ken (flip89) for pointing this out to me.

Anyway, before I decide what to post for this challenge, I read the definition of the word "habit" several times. I concluded that "habit" is very subjective. One person's habit is not another person's habit. It is what makes each and everyone of us unique. As a teacher in Psychology, I learn that a certain behavior, if repeated frequently, becomes a habit.

About the picture, I think I have to explain the context a little bit. In Asia (Thailand and the Philippines, to be specific), washing clothes is usually done during the weekends. For some, it becomes automatic. For rural children, it is a necessity as they will have no clean clothes for the week if they won't do so. I look at it as a habit because it is a regular thing to do. My Sunday habits include going to the church, eating lunch with my Filipino friends here in Bangkok, and playing badminton. If I don't do these activities, my weekend is not complete.

The shaking off of the clothes before hanging is probably a habit within a habit. But personally, I definitely believe that washing clothes is a habit to some, but a chore to another.

The bottomline is,I am glad many people like my picture. I was not hoping for a top 10 finish and I am glad that it did.

Librodo - so I guess the habit there is *when* it gets done (at the same time every week), not the fact that they have to do laundry. I chose to see it that way because of how you titled it.

I think it's a habit for some people to constantly argue whether a photo meets the challenge or not.

Shaking the clothes before hanging them on the line, IMHO, is certainly capable of being a habit. Some people may or may not do this. To do this, to me, seems as though you've slipped into that habit because it certainly doesn't have to be done! It's not a requirement, it's a preference, and by being preferred, you fall into the habit of doing it.

It is not a perference to me. It is something I perfer not to do. If it were up to me, we would all be running around nude.

It is an awesome shot, Librodo. Congrats on the top 10 finish.

P.s...I just have to give these folks a hard time.
