This is my first post but I've been lurking for awhile and trying to take in the wealth of knowledge here!

A little backstory....I'm currently 19. About 3 years ago, my mom died two days after my 16th birthday from rapidly growing ovarian cancer. In November 2005, a CT scan of her abdomen shows clean. 4 months later, the cancer had spread to her brain. Most people don't know a lot about ovarian cancer and not a lot is known about it.

I'm wanting to do a photo project on this. Right now, the idea in it's current form is to contact several oncologists and ask them to mention to their patients about this. I would like to have 5-10 women allow me to document them in their treatment and home life once a week over the course of several months. During those several months, I would also write a story to accompany the photos.

Now what to do with the photos...

I've thought about trying to make a book from it and get it donated from a publishing company. Then all sales of the book, the proceeds would go to the American Cancer Society. I've also thought about doing a gallery showing with donations taken to be donated, again, to the American Cancer Society.

So now that I've laid out a base idea for what I'd like to do....anyone have any ideas on how to execute it? Help me fine tune my plan? Has anyone ever done anything like this here? I know it's been done for more of the common cancers, such as breast cancer, but I've never seen it done for ovarian cancer.

Thanks for any and all help you guys can give.

I would like to offer my condolences and I support your selfless desire to do something that will benefit others.
I can't help you with the publishing question.
My mother in law was operated on today for breast cancer. The good news is that she discovered it early, and they think that they got all of it out. She will not even be needing chemo.
Without all the publicity generated by the awareness campaign, she may have not noticed it until it was too late.
What you are doing is a good thing.

My condolences on the loss of your mom. What a difficult thing to experience at such a young age.

Just wanted to chime in - I'm thinking that because of privacy laws, you are not going to get very far with the doctors. I'd like to suggest that you contact your local American Cancer Society Relay for Life group and pitch your idea to them. With their support, you could do the fundraiser together. I know that the teams in our area are very gung ho when it comes to the fundraising stuff.

Maybe they will also be able to help you find a group of women who are interested in your project.

Good luck to you and please post your progress here!

Thank you both for your condolences.

Melon: That's great that they discovered it early and she made it through surgery. I hope she's on her way to recovery!

colorcarnival: Thanks! I've contacted the American Cancer Society office to see if they could help. I have the same worry about doctors and privacy laws.

We'll see what happens. If anyone else has any suggestions, feel free to chime in!
