I recently purchased software on ebay like I always do and never had problems. So I won an item last night and everything seemed fine. I got my receipt and email saying I won. Then today I get the following email from paypal: (I blocked out their info)

Hello C, We recently learned that eBay removed the listing for the following transaction.
-----------------------------------Transaction Details------------------------------- Seller's Name: Mantas ****
Seller's Email: Mantuks@***
Seller's Transaction ID: ***
Transaction Date: Oct 28, 2009
Transaction Amount: -$226.99 USD
Your Transaction ID: *****
eBay item number: *******
Buyer's Transaction ID: ******

PayPal can help you understand and resolve transaction issues in the Security Center.

1. Go to PayPal.com.
2. Click Security Center at the top of the page.
3. Click Buying Safely on the left.
4. Click Protection for Your Purchases.
5. Click Purchase Protection Programs.

If you have questions, please click Contact Us at the bottom of the page. If you do not have a PayPal account, you will need to sign up for one. Once you open your account, you can view your transaction and file a dispute. When you sent your payment through PayPal, you received an email receipt. If you still have access to that receipt, open the email and click Sign Up Now.

Now this is strange because they are telling me that they know I received a receipt from paypal. Dont you have to have an account with paypal in order to use it to buy something? So why would they be telling me to sign up?

Then I get an email one minute later from Ebay:

Dear @hotmail.com),

Thanks for your interest in this listing:

Unfortunately, the item is no longer available for purchase. This is disappointing for everyone, but sometimes it's necessary to protect you as a buyer.

There are three main reasons why we remove listings:

-- The listing doesn't follow eBay guidelines.
-- The item isn't allowed on eBay or can only be listed under certain conditions.
-- The listing contains pictures or words in it that may have created copyright or trademark issues.

If the seller is able to fix the problem and relist the item, we hope you'll bid on it again.

We apologize for the inconvenience and have many other great deals on eBay. Just go to //www.ebay.com to continue your shopping today. We hope to see you soon.

Thank you,

eBay Inc.

Please don't reply to this message. It was sent from an address that doesn't accept incoming email.

Then an hour later I got an email from paypal telling me the item I purchased has shipped and they gave me a tracking number. There isnt any info on the tracking number yet because it was just posted.

Any ideas? I hate to have to contact ebay or paypal. It's such a hassle but I was just wondering if anyone has had emails like this by mistake or maybe a scam? I tried contacting the seller but haven't heard anything back yet.

Did the transaction post to your paypal account?

I would guess they decided the seller was was offering software he was not authorized to sell. Since Ebay owns paypal, I would think if the money was deducted, they should credit it back to you.

It also sounds like some wires got crossed (as happens in any large corporation or agency) and the left hand does not know what the right hand is doing.

It is likely that these are all computer generated e-mails that triggered when the product was delisted. They would include info for both Paypal members and non-mmebers. As for the fact that they deducted the money from your account and notified you that the product had shipped it must be that you completed the trasaction before the listing was pulled and they have not caught up as yet.

You might want to try and call them so you can talk to a real person to make sure. The otehr option is to see if the tracking number gets data and you get the product, assuming the product is good and not pirated then you would not care about the rest.

If they charged your account you need to contact the seller and tell them to refund it to your account. If you can not reach the seller you should also contact PayPal and eBay. With you being charged and receiving no merchandise eBay/PayPal has basically participated in a scam with the seller.

I went to the sellers profile and they have been a member since 2001 and has sold over 400 items. They just sent me an email and said they had theor listing removed for using unauthorized stock images.

Now I talked to paypal and they confirmed that the seller was using unauthorized stock images of the software.

Ebay will cancel auctions that use certain words in the title/description: "just like..." or "as good as..." or "comparable to..." are terms used to lure buyers. This may be why they canceled the auction, as this happened to me several months ago.

You do not need to have a Paypal account to receive money (I believe) but you do to make a payment. Or perhaps it was a Paypal payment only auction?? Does sound like they are following through despite the auction cancellation which could complicate a return. Hope it works out.
