I was reading a nice post from idnic this morning and it triggered a question about "books" for seniors. Cindi mentions creating a 20 page book for each senior and I know a that the more well known photographers in town charge about $300 if you keep your "proof book". I am curious about opinions on the concept of a senior book.... like how much editing is done for each image, what format a and how do you structure the pricing?

i give out proof disks so that kids dont have to pay for a full blown book. i do basic edits on all the photos, and do touch ups and all those goodies when they choose their prints. i also charge much less then other professional photographers because a hell of a lot of kids and parents either cannot pay or do not wish to pay hundreds of dollars on what in the end is simply a photo in the yearbook and the mail before graduation. my pricing is based on how much i pay, plus whatever i feel id like to earn on top of that.

We all have our own prices and in the end you get what you pay for.

I don't offer a book... but it's something I'm thinking of. I know Target, CostCo and all those guys make books. They're not great, but I think having a $10 (to us) 6x4 book as part of a package could be a nice selling point. I currently offer prints and wallet pics but am thinking about the cheap book route... depends how much work is involved in their creation.

So, if you want to do it and you think it will help, then why not?

Hey! :)

The books I offer are from Black River Imaging. They are lay-flat press books with high gloss pages, and the clients love them. Do keep in mind, the clients can go to wal-mart or blurb or whereever and order books of their own, so I need mine to look better and feel better to justify the cost. While I don't discuss my pricing on forums, I will say that BRI's books are affordable enough to allow me to charge about 4X their cost and still keep the books in a "happy range" for parents. To date, every senior (senior's parents) I have had has ordered a book -- most also order print packages.

As for editing, I only do special editing to a handful of shots. The one that will be on the cover, plus a few favs. The rest get minimal processing (color balance, sharpening, etc), and take very little time. It takes me 2 or 3 hours to design a 20 page book with FotoFusion and another 30 minutes or so to upload and order.
