4.Bigstockphoto Under $50.00
5.Canstockphoto Under $10.00

Mel,
thanks for posting this info. Just curious, over what period of time did these sales occur? Did you ever calculate what your $/image/year would be? (for example, some nature photographers use the rule of thumb of earning $1 per image per year for nature stock.)
Thanks,
John

All since Jan 2004

But some sites I only have less then 40 photos on

I have been disappointed in my sales at these sites, but, in fairness, I also probably only have about 50 images at each one:

Istock - $53
Dreamstime - $36
Shutterstock - $25

I have also started to submit to another new site (see this thread) that looks promising.

Melissa, can you give me a quick summary of the resolution sizes that these stock sites you use will accept? I have lots of photos at 1280x960, which I was led to believe when I started shooting that this was very decent size for lots of media, but from what I see on istock, it isn't close. I am afraid all those photos I shot at that res are not going to be any use to me. What do you think, do you have any info or advise about this stuff I have shot at this res and if I would ever be able to make it acceptable??

1280x960 is quite small. Using the highest quality setting on your camera you should definitely be able to submit to ShutterStock and Dreamstime as I have. All my submitted pictures are at 3 megapixels to both sites without interpolation.

I have been uploading everything i have to each of those sites. I have been fortunate enough to have high speed. In any case, I would sudjest beginnings to start out uploading to istock. My images are only one sample mind you, but i earn almost 2x as much on istock as on any other site AND i only have 3/4 the images there because they are more picky (or have been, now dreamstime seems to be the picky ones).

After that, They are all about the same.

The key to this stock photo think is you have to get as many great photos online as you can, the rule of thumb on (Istock) is you will make at least $1.00 per photo per year!

So if you have 50 photos online and you have $53.00 made you are right on track....So upload more and you will get more money!

Does this mean that you have somewhere in the neighborhood of 1500 images up there?

I think the trick for keywords is not so much using words that describe the image, but words that describe what the image could be used for!

well thanks!

Keywaord are very important, if people cannot find your image they are not going to buy it!
Use as many keywords as you can that apply to that image!

Not 5% - 25%.
Also, at 25 cents versus 10 cents you have to sell less than half as many images to make teh same money.

prof your calculations make no sense... it would be 25 cents on istock if exclusive or 23 cents on shutterstock. Plus willem said that he sells twice as much on shutterstock to begin with.

Wow, I must be a really awful person. I can't even get into Shutterstock to view photos. They've banned me, for what reason other than they don't like my photos, I don't know! When I try to go to their website I get a warning message that their administrators have been notified I'm trying to log in.

I'm new to stock photography. I'm having better luck, at least with my new uploads, to Dreasmstime. Shutterstock made me feel like an idiot or a sociopath (which I am not!). My photos may not be the best, but they're not evil or porn; they're mainly travel photos. I guess at my age, I should know by now - life just isn't fair and to get used to it!

Do you share an ip address with someone who is using their powers for evil?

No, I simply followed the directions for signing up and uploading. If I did do that, I'm not aware of how I could have.

That's kind of bizarre. I would email them to find out what they thought I did, just out of curiosity. Even if I didn't want to participate there anymore.
05/27/2005 04:48:54 PM · #222
Yeah, maybe I should; just for peace of mind's sake.

Can anyone recommend any similar stock photo sites in the UK? Or alternatively, can anyone tell me if there's any point me signing up to a US site... do you get paid via something like Paypal, or does the money go straight to your account?

(Just in case anyone checks my profile, yes I know I'm not the world's greatest photographer, but I reckon it's still worth a try!)

Thanks for any advice.

Read the faqs in the various stock sites. Many will convert to PayPal for payments.

As far as i know both shutterstock and istockphoto can pay by paypal, i think shutterstock can even send you a check anywhere in the world.
