So i brought my wife a Nikon D40 kit complete with the standard 18-55mm lens thinking that she may start to show even a glimmer of interest in taking some photos with anything other than a phone. Needless to say I was disillusioned so the D40 has sat in a cupboard ever since. It has hardly been used but is now out of warranty.
However, when I tried to use it for a recent challenge the camera would not work. After lots of trial and error with different combinations of my D700 and lenses it would appear that the D40 body is absolutely fine, but the lens will not autofocus. In manual mode it focuses fine and the D40 shutter fires.
I no longer need this camera so want to sell it. A quick look on eBay shows that D40 kits complete with lens go for about £240 and the bodies alone go for aprox £175. I could buy another lens from ebay but I would need to pay about £60 so after fees would be no better off than selling the body on it's own.
Does anyone know if this is a common problem with this lens and can it be easily/cheaply fixed? If not does anyone want to buy a D40 with a manual focus lens for £200!!

What would a repair of the lens cost?

| Is that lens a DS lens? I have heard of at least one case where a store was selling the D-40 body with a non-ds lens as a kit. Which resulted in the person taking the camera back thinking it was not working properly only to find out the store screwed them over by including a lens that only worked on manual focus. |

I just had my 18-200VR sent for repair....same problem as you described. Auto focus not working although it did seem to work at some focal lengths (i.e. at 18mm but not at 200mm). It would work manually.
I bought the lens on ebay....listed as new but was it really?? I had my local camera shop send it for repair, and they did not expect the warranty to be held as it was from ebay and my only receipt was my paypal receipt. It also appeared that I neglected to send in the extended warranty. The lens is nearly 1 1/2 yrs old now...
I got a call this week that the lens is back and Nikon honored the warranty. It only cost me the $35.00 that the shop charges for shipping....
so give it a try. |

| Thanks everyone. Yes it is the DX lens that is supplied in a combined Nikon Body and lens box. I guess I need to find a repairer locally to see what the cost is. I simply assumed that even a minor repair would be close to the cost of a new lens |

| I have a couple of autofocus Nikon zoom lenses I have been trying to sell cheap if you are interested in getting it running again. Not sure what the cost to send them across the pond would be, though. |

This should be under warrantee as Nikon lenses are warranted for 5 years in the US. |
