National Portrait Gallery's Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition - all media was accepted for the competition. First prize is a cash award of $25,000 and a separate commission from the museum to portray a remarkable living American for its permanent collection.

Shame we can't see a larger image of the portrait online. It does look pretty great from what i can see. Loads of personality and lovely muted colour. |

Thanks for the link, Karen. I enjoyed looking through all the ones they've posted online and will go back and read more here in a bit. |

The winner is really a lovely portrait, from what can be seen. Very subtle and understated. Best kinds of portraits imo. |

That is one of those artsy fartsy things to me. to me that portrait is very BLAND. You take ONLY that photo for a client who is paying, I think they would be pretty pissed. Just my opinion.

Well, this ain't *about* paying clients, it's about art. Never the twain shall meet (or rarely, anyway...).

What do you (any of you) think of the way the subject, and the background, are lit? |

I think it's exceptionally descriptive light, if imbalance and instability is the core of what you are after. It's a troubling image. It's not a flattering shot, but if it's in any way faithful to who she actually *is*, it's a great shot.

Evocative of Rembrandt work for me, especially the background lighting and colour choice and the model's neo-classical (almost Greek) features. |
