My son used the beta version and said it was great for laptops, but I'm ok with Vista on my PC. Any thoughts? Experiences?

I tried installing Windows 7 on my PC last night and it caught on fire! Our house burned down and we lost everything! Thanks Microsoft!

Yikes and Art wasn't even involved. Were the villagers up in arms? Were they pissed? Is it a conspiracy?

I installed it on a netbook last night. The sky lit up and angels sang. My wife's Macintosh cringed in fear.

Really, if you are happy with Vista, and none of the features of 7 are things you desire, then there is really not much reason to upgrade. I like playing with new stuff, and I also need to know it for work. I never really learn the nuts and bolts of something until I have it on my own computer. I will be putting it on both netbooks and my desktop. (I bought the 3 license family-pak)

Someone told me if you bought a PC with Vista in it, that you were automatically eligible for a free upgrade but that kind of sounds like BS to me. Does anyone know?

There is date attached to that - if you bought one after a certain date, then you do get a free upgrade.

It depends on when you bought the PC with Vista. I built a computer just a few months ago. I specifically purchased "Vista with a free upgrade to Windows 7." If your computer came with a free upgrade, you would have gotten an upgrade code.

Only if you bought one very recently and if they gave you a certificate for the free upgrade. They did this to help maintain computer sales over the summer once the release date for Win7 had been announced.

I heard that if you play the install DVD backwards you hear satanic voices. Even worse, if you play it forwards it installs Windows. ;-)

you're wrong there... if you play it backwards you hear bill gates laughing like satan, and the sounds of cash flipping though a counting machine...

and when played forward it 'might' install windows - so long as if you've been running winXP you've already backed up all your data, contacts, emails, downloaded app, etc, and formatted the hard drive... otherwise, you better hit eject button quick !

They want to make sure the students learn something about troubleshooting computers. After all, education is a major focus of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Here is an interesting read... this author is not a WinFanBoy, nor a MS basher, he just tells it like it is. In his opinion, Win7 is a worthwhile move from Vista, and I agree. I built a Core2 Duo system last Fall, it ran Vista until May when I loaded the Win7 RC, and I have never looked back. My wife's Vista machine will get an upgrade to Win7 in the next six months.
The MacFanBoys will thumb their noses in ignorant bliss, but Win7 is a very solid, fast, efficient, OS. Certainly better than Vista, and light-years ahead of XP. A buddy of mine loaded Win7 last week on an older Pentium 4 machine and had only one hardware issue, due to his setup using two different, older graphics cards simultaneously, something which is not supported in WDDM 1.0 (the driver model used for the release candidate). The released version of Win7 uses (or will shortly use, I have not confirmed which) WDDM 1.1 which will support this type of configuration.
There has been a *lot* of talk about pricing for Win7, which is steep if you don't qualify for an OEM version (typically all you have to do is buy some qualifying piece of hardware). The thought is that with Apple making a huge push (note the idiotic new Mac-PC advert with the flashbacks) that street prices for Win7 will fall. I really don't know if this is a realistic expectation, but it is a possibility. Personally, I will wait a little bit, and see.

I have had Win 7 loaded for about 2 weeks on my MacBook. One of the main reasons I got Windows was to run LabView 2009 in a Windows environment, specifically in a clean Windows environment for troubleshooting. So far, Win 7 hasn't played nicely installing Labview...I can surf the web and other routine things just fine.

Sounds like a problem with LabView's compatibility with Win7. Question: is your Win7 install 32-bit or 64-bit? And have you tried running the LabView installer under a compatibility mode? In order to do so, right-click on the executable and select properties, bring up the compatibility tab, and check the box to "run in compatibility mode" then select the OS version you want, most likely XP SP3.
It's possible that might solve it. If not, I'd contact LabView.

I went out to the stores here in Wellington today to have a look, They only offer single license upgrade versions here. for $249 NZ so I came home and ordered the Family Pack upgrade online from the States and will have a friend ship it to me. $149 US and I can install it on 3 PC's vs nearly $800 NZ for the 3 individual copies, Was a No Brainer. I won't have it as fast as I would have liked. But at least I am going to have some money left over and won't need any lubricants to go with it. Another good thing about it is, Over the next couple of weeks I am sure some bug reports will flow into MS and the patches will flow out, So hopefully by the time I get around to installing it the first set of updates will fix any major issues that might be discovered by then. I will also have plenty of time to read up on what is new and have a good understanding of the new features before I start playing with them.

Yeah, after messing around with it some more, I'm pretty sure it's not a Win7 issue. I'll try running the installer under compatibility mode as you suggest, but, at this point, I'm looking to National Instruments (the makers of LabView) to supply a solution.

Seems to be working now.

My disc is on the way, as I got a free upgrade when I bought my laptop, so Ill be switching my laptop over this week or next. Im not going to mess with my desktop yet, because I can't risk any compatibility issues as its my workhorse.
