I've seen so much better. The best appear not to enter this contest.

You can see a better size here The smaller one doesn't do it justice.

I agree with Van. My guesss is the award was more for the fact that he planned and executed a difficult shot of an interesting species more than the shot itself.

Interesting also that it was shot with what I suspect was the most expensive set up of any camera amongst the award photos... chance, admittedly but it seemed like an odd choice. I thought that there were better shots there.

The exhibition of all of the award photos is open in Bristol Museum now, for those in that part of the world. There are some great shots there. A couple that I found surprising, but mostly really top quality.

Definitely inspiring... to buy a canon 100-400mm. That's all that is holding me back... hahahahah

Five great photos on that page. The b&w one is sure to be much imitated.

Guess he'll need to submit a little more than the original on this one...

Looks like he'll have to track down and tranqualize the wild wolf (giving him the benefit of the doubt here) and drag it in to prove its not the captive.

I showed this shot to my wife and told her "That's amazing, I've never heard stories of wolves (North American) jumping fences, they seem to exploit holes and breaks. I wonder if its a trait of European wolves."

Am I the only one who wondered how a photograph wins photographer of the year?
12/22/2009 02:36:25 PM · #14
Not good. Seems it was taken at the zoo.

Wonder if the money goes to the wolves now?

They never said it was taken at the zoo. Or I haven't seen it, anyway. He apparently transported a tame, possibly even trained, wolf to the location where the image was made. Not that it makes much difference, but...

Here's more info into the evidence against the winning photo. The wolf doesn't do much for me, but the location is very suspicious.

I was pointing out the grammatical error. It sounds like the actual photograph (as opposed to the photographer) was declared the photographer of the year. It was even on a Brit website. Isn't the Queen's english supposed to be better than that?

Yah, that seems to raise the possibility the shot was actually made IN the preserve, with the "gate" constructed for the shot...

Interestingly, MY photo was originally selected as the winner, but it, too, came under suspicion and was disqualified.

:-) After a long day of shopping and fighting for parking spaces in the crazy snowbound late shoppers arena...this was fun to see! Thanks Art.

That photo is suspiciously clean. I work with horses but often see farm dogs, foxes and coyotesin the line of work prowling about.

Never once have I seen one even attempt to do anything but stay as low and close to the ground as possible when wriggling through fences or gates. Taking a jump that big requires a lot of energy. And any prey animal would easily see a wild predator (especially one that is that big, and over-jumping the very suspiciously not-over-grown gate like a dog in an agility class, which is pretty much the ONLY time I've ever seen a canine jump something so big) - uhmm, for a gate into a disused corral...well, where are the weeds, tall grass, sagging fenceline etc? None is visible.

And that gate looks pretty damn firm, not rickety or leaning off of its hinges. Gates take a lot of wear and tear and tend to go pretty fast when neglected. Getting nitpicky, I know, but still food for thought. Will be interesting to see how this pans out.

ETA: Good to see you back, Art! Now stay! Jeez! :-)
