PPA provides ongoing education, national competition (similar to DPC but on a much larger scale), legal assistance, studio management advisers, group insurance discounts and many many other benefits. Its not inexpensive to be a member, but if you participate in all that PPA has to offer, you will become a better photographer with a better sense of how the business of photography works. The educational opportunities alone are enough to justify joining. PPA members support each other as well, if I were sick on a wedding date, I know which PPA members live in my area, their phone numbers, and would have someone standing in for me for my event without blinking. I would do the same for them. The competitions are on a national level, you truly see how you compete with the best of the best, and you learn so much by trying. Just by seeing what the "greats" are doing each year, you tend to raise your own bar.
I'm not saying PPA is the only group that provides these benefits, but you asked about this one specifically.
Have a look at PPA.com. You might be tempted to look closer.
