thanks again for the opinion on the 17-55 and i understand what you're saying about my current kit. i take much more pictures that arent on here, and seeing as i am a college student (aka short on money) i wasnt planning on doing anything in the near future. i definitely agree with you that i need to take more pictures, practice makes perfect :). thank you again everyone for your in depth and insightful responses :)

Offhand, I note that you don't have a macro lens or a good telephoto. The 70-200 series is, of course, top notch. I prefer the f/4 IS because it's smaller and lighter, and I rarely need that much zoom indoors (where f/2.8 would matter most). Canon's 70-300 is also excellent and would give you more reach. Tamron's 28-75 is still one of my favorite lenses despite owning lots of L glass. The focus would be slow for action, but perfectly fine for studio work.

I wouldn't bother switching your XSi for a 40D unless you find the Rebel's grip too small for comfort. The image quality is roughly equal between those two models. A pair of AlienBees monolights with big softboxes would be a better investment for portraiture IMO.
