The only way for humans to eliminate impact on Mother Earth is to die as a group, or leave the planet. I think cotton bags would be a great solution. Offer substantial discounts for bringing your own bags, and charge significant prices for supplying them more than once. The inevitable wasted ones will decompose much quicker than plastic. Of course it's possible that the filthy humans could invent a new type of plastic that degrades quickly into biological friendly components when exposed to the environment. I hear that plastic is being made from corn. |

A few places are starting to grow plastic in plants - genetic engineering. They can harvest the plants, extract that natural plastic compound and use it, and then when disposed of, it will decompose after a much, much shorter span of time.
It just isn't catching on in a widespread sense yet.
