I think it would be good to have something on the homepage such as:
Open Challenge: Multiple Light Sources
2 days remaining
Rules: Basic Editing
Submission: May. 19th - May. 25th
Submissions: 115
View Details and Submit
It could get more specific as the deadline gets closer, for example:
7 days
6 days
5 days
4 days
3 days
48 hours
47 hours
...
3 hours
2 hours
60 minutes
59 minutes
58 minutes
...
2 minutes
1 minute
Seconds might be a bit too specific :P

Hmm... good idea, not too sure about the going into minutes at the end, but otherwise would work nicely.

I think it would need to do minutes, or people might log in with 15 minutes to go - see it says "1 hour" and then come back 25 mins later with a photo only to see they're too late. Further away from the deadline this isn't as vital.
I think it would also add a fun sence of urgency and tension for those people who stay up all night to count their first few votes :P

I like this idea, and it's easy to code it to display right down to the seconds actually...

I actually suggested almost this exact thing to Langdon privately several months ago. I said it would be helpful for those who were not in the server's time zone (US/Eastern). My idea was to keep the:
Submission: May. 19th - May. 25th
line up until 24 hours before the deadline, and then switch to:
Submission: [orange] Less than 24 hours remaining [/orange]
Submission: [orange] Less than 23 hours remaining [/orange]
(etc.)
then, when it got down to less than an hour:
Submission: [red] Less than 6 minutes to go! [/red]
Submission: [red] Less than 5 minutes to go! [/red]
(etc.)
The use of "Less than" was so that it was still valid even if they used the "Back" button on their browser to get back to the home page, technically it would still be valid. =]
I suggested this be implemented not only for the submission deadline, but also the voting deadline. And Tina's right, it would be very easy to code up in PHP. Maybe if I write the code and send it to D&L...

Go for it :) I think it should still have number of days remaining. I'm often unsure how many days it is until a certain date - but I know it's always monday or wednesday. A newbie wouldn't necessarily. I get especially confused at the start/end of a month cos I dunno how many days are in each month, hehe.

That is a really cool idea. I know a couple of times I've been down to the deadline on an entry, and I've gotten confused with time zones and all.

wouldn't it be just as easy to list the deadline in all the time zones, and use a geographic location beside each time zone to aid in which zone people are in?
12:00am Eastern time(New York City)
11:00pm central time(Chicago)
10:00pm mountain time(Denver I hope)
9:00pm pacific time (Los Angeles)
A lot of time it is just not realizing that it is 12:00am eastern time. Also most of the time the only ones missing the deadline are the ones in the central, mountain and pacific time zones.

And for the folks who live outside the US? :)
We could use GMT and confuse the heck out of everyone.

We have a lot more than the 4 continental US time zones to deal with. If we implemented the ability to customize for your local time zone, we would have to do this for every time zone around the world (and there are more than 24 of them, plus the various worldwide incarnations and schedules for Daylight Saving/Summer Time. For more information on this, see //www.worldtimezone.com/faq.html.
I think the countdown is a good idea, though. :)

Pandering to the masses, I say. :-P
Just let everyone move to the East Coast of America, and all this would be solved.
On second thought, maybe do the countdown.
Just as a matter of course, isn't the server time located at the bottom of the page, so it can be seen whether or not you are EST or not? |

Let's all move to Iceland where the Canon 10D are a plenty. Also some winning landscape potential :)
How difficult is looking at the server time at the bottom and compare the time to you computer time? |

I guess a countdown timer is ok. No other countdowns to watch once the Olsen twins countdown ends in a month :P

Where's my big ole time clock! I want the countdown in big, fat, red neon. Tick, tock, tick, tock....click refresh, click refresh...maybe if I click faster the changeover will happen sooner...
Addicted? Me? Whatever gave you that idea?
clickclickclick...
Click- I mean Clara
