Hi,

I'm having problems with sharp details /focus with my images.

I'm using a cubelite tent and shooting clothing with a Nikon D80 and Sigma 18-50 mm F2.8.

The problem is the buttons are always shoot very blurred. They seem to reflect a lot of light. I'm using two 3200K lamps.

I've tried masses of settings but can't seem to get the results I require.

I need to shoot the garments for a magazine so require good quality, sharp images.

They look ok to start with but when I zoom in using photosshop the detail just blurs.

Any help or advice would be much appreciated

Can you post a link to the pics to show us the issues?

Hi Bebe,

Thank you for your help. I'll upload an image from work in the morning and post a link.

The cubelite tent gives very flat, even lighting, especially if the two lights are opposed. The perception of detail depends on contrast, either edge contrast or color contrast. Since buttons typically have rounded edges, and since they typically are not of a contrasting color, you have none of the elements required for good rendering of detail. Adding to your problem may be that the buttons themselves are reflective, so they are radiating your diffused lighting in all directions.

You're going to have to modify the lighting setup if you want the buttons to seem crisp and sharp. As Bebe said, it would help to see a sample image or two.

You probably need to test the sharpness of your lens. Don't confuse that with depth of field. Sharpness varies thru the range of fstop for a particular lens. The mindset is that lens are generally sharpest at 2 fstops above their widest aperture. I tested all my lenses and found that to be true.
