Symantec Antivirus is very good, it comes with firewall as well and when you set to live update (download virus ide's before they become a threat (usually)) it is a very solid program.
Norton is also good, especially if you run with Sophos too. |

| I use a hardware firewall and McAfee AV (not running continuously, I should add). I also use AdAware to remove spyware. |

Be aware now of Sasser type viruses, with XP or 2000 you should make sure the virus scanner does update automatically. As this virus does not need to be run (like an e-mail attachment or file from disk) leaving your pc switched on will probably get the virus unless you have applied the security patch. Apparently an unprotected pc would catch Sasser after 10 mins of being online unprotected.
Unfortunately there will probably be more of these viruses and i know that i do not want anything to happen on my pc, even though i back up regulary.
Don't take a risk, buy the software and register for the updates! |

I've been using Ad-aware for years and love it but have recently started using Spybot Search & Destroy also.
It's free at //www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=news
Spybot finds things Ad-aware doesn't.
I prefer not to allow any programs to do automatic updates.
Steve Gibson's site is one of the best around for secutity info Gibson Research. |

If you need to protect PC from SASER just inable XP firewall, before you download any upgrade .
