ok thanks everyone i figured it out.. i can change the zoom on my flash now.. so now all I need to know is when do i need to change the zoom.... does it depend on how far away I am from the subject? or does it depend on the focal length of my lens? i normally shoot with a 70-200mm F2.8, a 50mm F2.8 or my 18-200mm F3.5-5.6

Think of the zoom head exactly as you would the zoom on your lens. How you want the light depends on what you want to do with the light - if you want it tight then zoom, if you don't want it tight then go wide.

I suggest reading up at strobist: //strobist.blogspot.com , Mr Hobby will show how to make that sb-800 sing. [eta - assuming you are going off-camera with the flash, if the sb-800 is on-camera then you can just let the camera auto-zoom the flash for you]
