It's... well... *popular*... It's the photorag equivalent of DPC voters. Not real high on the art scale, but a lot of useful information and technically outstanding images.

Boy did you hit the nail on the head!
I have a subscription and I do like most of it but what I'm not so interested in is articles on these photgraphers that travel all over the world with all of this top equipment doing things that I would never be able to afford to do. I like the stuff that is related to the 'average' Joe Photographer.
Overall, it's worth $2/issue. |

I think Bear is being a tad harsh - "photorag" is a bit of an exaggeration. It's certainly not National Geographic, but it's a nice magazine. I enjoy reading mine each month, and there's usually at least one article that I find interesting or useful.
I like it better than "Outdoor Photographer" magazine, which I used to get.

I have a subscription, and enjoy it, but I have to say that $48 sounds kind of steep for 2 years. (Looks like the exchange rate is fairly close to 1:1 right now) For that cost I hope it is a fundraiser and his organization gets a nice cut of it. |

The magazine web site lists the subscription price at $24 for two years -- but Canadians have to pay an extra $8 per year, which takes you up to $40 for two years (this is all in US dollars). So $48 for two years if you are Canadian is not all that outrageous compared to the official $40 subscription price. But clearly Spazmo99 has himself a good deal. |

yea... in Canada we have it rough... most magazines are based in the states, so we get screwed on extra fees... there are even other fees that get tacked on ontop of that $8 and stupid actual exchange rate is usually 6 cents worse than the bank rate (about 1 cdn = 0.95 us reight now... real rate we get is more like 1 cdn = 0.89 US)
from my recent findings, the best deal for Canadians is through these fundraiser companies which take care of all the extra fees / exchange rates... it's usually much cheaper after you work out all the fees...
it sucks.. but Canada still kicks ass! woo hoo!!! yeeeeaaaaa!!!! hahaha
btw: thanks for all the tips! I decided to go for it... I'm looking foreward to reading it on the train on the way to work... =)

I didn't mean it negatively. "Rag" is a colloquial term for a newspaper or a magazine. "Photorag" = shorthand for "photography magazine" in my mind. I wouldn't disrespect Popular Photography, it has a long track record and can be genuinely helpful. It's just that their aesthetic, from my point of view, is a tad... commercial... if you catch my drift? I was a satisfied subscriber for many years.

Try $10+ per issue ... here in Japan. I wouldn't pay that much for it, but fortunately the library has them so I borrow them from there.
