I have a Canon 30D and i am having an issue with it's focus.

When i focused my 30D, it is always soft in the viewfinder when i use autofocus. i can manual focus it sharper, but as soon as i depress the shutter control, it autofocuses and it becomes soft again. but here is the deal. The image is sharp, no softness. So the image i see in my viewfinder is not the same image i see in my end image. This is driving me crazy!!! i have completed a great deal of experiments to see why this is an issue and i cannot seem to get my auto focus to give me a sharp image in my viewfinder.

has anyone seen this and is there a solution to fix this? i am looking at a 7D but i have no intention of getting rid of my 30D, so i do want to fix this issue. Any help would be appreciated.

Have you tried adjusting the diopter on the viewfinder? It sounds like that may be the real issue.

i adjusted the Diopter 8 ways to Sunday. No help. That was my initial question, but so far, that doesn't seem to work.

Try wiping any crud off you lens and mount contacts. Try using a pump blower into you mirror box aiming at the focus module.

or wipe off your viewfinder. . .

i have a similar issue with mine-- but in the LCD preview. No matter how sharp the picture actually may be, it will look soft on my screen.

I suggest you send the body in to a Canon service center and have them service it. The cost is fairly small, usually and they are quite effective and efficient in my experience. I recently, for example, had my 24-70mm lens serviced and calibrated. The improvement in focus was excellent.
