Hi All,
its well documented that Adobe Camera Raw 5.5 and Photoshop CS3 are not compatible - I tried and its true...
So The work around is Upgrade to Lightroom 2.5 (which has 5.5) convert RAW to DNG - THEN Allow Lightroom to convert the DNG to PSD which will then open in Photoshop.
My question is - will I lose quality?
Thanks
Tony

I don't believe it needs to be that complicated. If you're already committing to using DNG, you could just use the free DNG converter (no LR required -- it's standalone software) [ direct link to Windows / Mac versions]. Test on a sample and see if you can load it in CS3. If not, you can try to backset your compatibility level to dng-1.1 and/or acr 5.4, 4.6, 4.1 or 2.4 via command line options (see the command-line documentation for details).
That would give you a single-step solution, in terms of file conversion. DNG->PSD is going to more-than-double your space requirements, but should be possible. The raw->DNG->PSD solution you're considering should not result in any quality loss, but it will take up a good chunk of space.

Using Lightroom as the "front end" is a great idea, if only for the cataloging, developing tools, interface... all the little nicities that Lightroom offers. You should be able to let Lr convert to DNG and do away with the PSD step. Ps should open the DNGs. Alternatively, used a non-lossy compressed TIFF as your "working format." That way you still "export," so you are still creating a "working copy" and you can still retain 16 bit workflow. |

Using LR you can convert the RAW to PSD directly. No need for the middle man.
Or Raw to Tiff, or Raw to DNG whichever your preferred format is. |
