Perhaps so, but you cannot tell by your impression of the shot how much effort actually went into it. I have received comments suggesting "lack of effort" and it is definitely not the case. An experiment that did not work for most DPC voters? Certainly. There are many low scoring shots that have a lot of effort behind them, and also many decently scoring shots that were quick snaps.

Amen! I'm notorious, in my own mind, for entering FS shots that don't have a prayer of resonating with voters but which appeal to my own quirky sensibilities and which didn't fit into any of our themed challenges that month. Often in preference to just another of the same-old pandering-to-the-voters beautiful shots. If I can't do it in a free study, where CAN I do it?

Most recent example, last Free Study:

Though I suppose that one arguably shows some "effort" and "composition" LOL.

Regardless of the challenge, I look at each photo with the idea in mind that the photographer thought that it was good enough to enter into a challenge so why not take a minute and try to see the photo the way he or she does.
If for some reason I can't find anything about the photo that interests me, I will vote it a five.
If the photo appears to be of such quality that it would warrant a score of less than a four, then I just simply prefer to not vote on it.
I realize that every photographer, regardless of their personal skill level has paid the dues to be here and many are here because they would like to learn to be better photographers and they enjoy sharing their work with others. I also realize that giving someone a score of a one or a two on their photo has a way of discouraging them in the future and I try never too discourage anyone from doing something that they are passionate about.
I vote every challenge pretty much the same way each time.
A free study is the same as any other challenge except that there is usually much more competition, but, the competitors have much more time to work on their photo's.
Just my humble opinion.
:)

Hmm....5.15.....I don't get that at all.

I think that's a cool shot.

I just guess that I've sort of come to the conclusion that a FS shot has to be something really special.....maybe that's not right, but it seems to be my working concept.

Maybe I should look a little harder this time.

I usually reserve votes of 1,2,3 for images that don't meet the challenge (depending how bad the image is and off the mark they are on the challenge). Since its a free study? I rarely if ever give anything less than a four. I would think that most people would vote that way but I'm probably wrong.

That's a nice thing...

This is an idea I like, although there are times that I like to vote 100%.

If I vote lower than my usual on an image, I try to make myself tell the person WHY I gave them a low(er) score.

Look at the top ten or twenty of any Free Study, and you'll see that certain types of images always do better. I think many here vote Free Studies like a popularity contest. Those images with "commercial appeal" (birds, flowers, landscapes, portraits of pretty children, anything in Iceland) always do better. Ideally an image should be judged on its own merits, and that's how I try to vote. If it's a photograph of a steaming heap of feces, I vote on how good it holds up among other shots of feces I might (or hopefully, might not) have seen. I suspect even the most artistic of fecal photography would sink to the bottom of a Free Study. So much for sh*t floats.

As an aside, this is only the second Free Study I haven't participated in since becoming a member. There were several images I was happy with, but all off the beaten path (no feces) and I just wasn't up for the beating this month. paulbtlw had the right idea last month; even if the shots weren't to his taste, he went through the effort to recognize the effort and comment on the photograph on its own terms. Thank you, Paul.

He sure did, and "thank you Paul" from me as well, for the thoughtful and perceptive comment on the "Vacationers" shot I posted earlier this thread. I was quite disturbed by the abyssmal scoring on that image, but Paul's comment took some of the sting off.
