If you have the £££ then get the 85mm, it is a completely different beast than the 24-105 - faster, sharper, incredible contrast and that beautiful bokeh.. You wont be disappointed.. Enjoy your new camera you lucky boy.

I have a 85f 1.8 and love it! I would imagine it would produce an overall better image, at 85mm. Less distortion and such, compared to the zoom. Simms is rite about the bokeh too. This is a great portrait lens on a full frame! Check online for sample shots, that's what I did. Then at least you will know, if its worth your investment. Two thumbs up, you won't be disappointed.

cool cheers Mags.....

I had a 40D which I used a 50MM 1.8 and LOVED the results (even though the lens was £30) - so this 85MM puts me back in the same ball park....

good to hear the reference ........

Not a cheaper version as it is a completely different lens. Generally primes run a bit cheaper than zooms due to the fact the construction/number of elements etc is easier also, no IS like your 24-105 lens, although the larger aperture will pretty much compensate by allowing a higher shutterspeed. In fact, at 85mm, the prime will always beat the 24-105 hands down (although the 24-105 is a superb all rounder and far more versatile).

If you can afford it, get it, if not you will be more than happy with your new setup.

thanks Simms....

when I mean by cheaper version was........ the Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM is cheaper than the Canon Ef 85mm F/1.2 F 1.2 L Ii Usm

so is Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM better than 24-105 Lens?

cheers

Congrats on your new purchase. I sold my 85mm 1.8, regretted it so much I just went out and bought a new one again. You can̢۪t go wrong.

Ummmm, yes, its better at 85mm than the 24-105, but as I mentioned before, the 24-105 is a fantastic lens, but altogether a different lens.. Far more versatile - you`'ll love it. I tend to use primes hell of a lot more these days so if I was to choose between the two I would opt for the 85mm, but thats personal preference and more towards my style of shooting. Please dont regret buying your 24-105. its an amazing all round lens as lots of people here will agree.

I have just seen you are in the UK, sadly Cheshire, if you was closer you could always borrow mine after `wedding season` to give it a trial run - but alas I am down South in Essex, so not really feasible. But so the 85 1.8 is miles better than your old 50mm 1.8 - better in so many ways they cannot be compared.
