It seems to me that canon's wider primes don't match the quality of the nifty fifty. Why is this so?
I'm looking for a normal prime lens on my crop sensor camera (so about 28-35mm) and after looking at plenty of reviews, I don't get the feeling that any of them will match the nifty fifty when I'd like for it to match the 50mm f/1.4. Is this true? Is it impossible to get a canon prime lens in this range that matches the 50 1.4 or did I get the wrong impression?
edit: I'm mainly talking about consumer lenses not the L-series; sub-$500
Thanks,
Justen

You might try out the 28/1.8. On an APS-C camera it will probably be pretty good. It might not quite match the 50/1.4, but realistically the 50/1.4 is not perfect either. I would suggest you trial this lens to see if it meets your expectations. It is within your price point. Another option is the 35/2. Again, I'd suggest trying it out.
Of course, I have to say, for outstanding performance the 35/1.4 is pretty much top of the heap in that range, but of course the price point is nearly 3x higher. |

there is some sigma 30mm f1.4. People say it is very good.
Ps: sorry it is not canon, but a possiblity so mentioned. |

I guess I'll have to try them out. One thing I really want is USM, so the 35mm L may be the only option which means I'll just have to save up for a while.
The sigma 30mm looks good except for sharpness (especially at f1.4). I think I may be expecting too much and should just buy the 35mm L in a year or so. If canon would revamp their wide primes I think I'd be happy because it seems like the newer tele primes are what I'm looking for in terms of IQ (50mm 1.4 and 85mm 1.8). |

have you seen samples from 30mm sigma at wide opened??
i have not seen samples to but have read many times people saying that it is pretty good even wide open (sharpness-wise). So give it a serious look before you throw it out.
ps: this is my subjective opinion. So i might be wrong. My observation is that canon files have a plastic-type look. And has a bit of smudge in it. (noise reduction). So at 100% it might not look as sharp as you might expect.
(in other words look for sample where NR is set to zero). |

i found a link about sigma 30mm.
//www.photozone.de/pentax/145-sigma-af-30mm-f14-ex-dc-pentax-k-review--test-report
says that wide open central resolution is good but corners are soft.
have a look. |

This is what I looked at. but those samples look pretty good. That's what I get for looking at 100% crop samples. |

I picked up a 35/f2 about a year ago. It is one of the original EOS primes introduced in the late 80's and early 90's, that predated the USM motor technology. The focus is somewhat noisy (same type of motor as the nifty fifty), but it's fast and accurate (like the 50/1.8, no manual focusing when it's set to autofocus). The build however is from another era - this lens was made in Japan, where now it seems only the L series is still produced there.
Here are a few images taken with it:

It also shares the same 52mm filter with your 50/1.8, so no need to buy a new size polarizer or whatever else you may use. While Mine was NOS (produced about 8 years ago - never used)and I got it for a steal, you can still find them new for under $300 and used for under $225. I also found the hood for a song on ebay. |
