I'm contemplating a Flickr Pro account. Not so much for the unlimited this and that, but for the stats (what can I say? I'm a figures freak). I'm curious though, do the stats work retroactively? Or do stats only start accumulating after I pay for a Pro account? Any other perks that I should know about? Thanks.

Here's an interesting stat: More coprorate and commercial image users admit to stealing pictures from Flikr than from any other source. I read that a couple of years ago and closed my Flikr account.

Watermark them or only post small sizes if you are concerned. They get stolen from DPC as well, but Flickr is a larger target. It also makes some difference if you are a pro photographer.

I say go for it. You can't beat the storage space for the small fee. There is one caveat, though...WATERMARK YOUR IMAGES!
I've been a Flickr Pro user for a couple of years and have over 4200 photos there. Many of them are private and I can send private links to friends, family, etc. This is a great feature.
Before I started watermarking my photos (about a year ago), no one really contacted me about any of my photos. I had plenty of comments and such, but no direct contact. Once I started watermarking, I've licensed quite a bit of my photos. My photos have been used in Amnesty International's Annual Report, used in poster-sized ads in Volkswagon Canada dealerships, on intranet sites for a few no-for-profit organizations, in MLS listings for real estate firms, and personal print purchases.
That made me wonder how many times my photos have been lifted before watermarking. Hmm...

I don't do flickr anymore, it is a theft farm and almost no customizing. For flickr, stats are based on cache, it means it's pretty much crap. The only photo hosting site that I know of has a good stats page is Smugmug.
I only use flickr for it's user groups now. |

i've been considering using watermarks myself. i just don't like seeing them on the images. there have been some though that are very well done and actually don't seem to bother the image. i think with the proper design and placement i might do something like this. i've have no clue about how to create and place them. any tips. |

I will agree that is the strongest aspect about Flickr for me. And the same goes for this site. |

Okay. Point taken. I'm looking into watermarking.
Still need to know... If I upgrade to Pro, will I see stats right away? |

It depends how much people clear their cache and how many different people actually view that photo. Also if someone links a photo in to a forum it won't get any extra views.
I don't think you'll see stats right away, only when you sign up for pro account and there after. |

With a pro account you can also disable right clicking. But their are ways around it. |

I have a pro account (just re-upped it this week) and love it. The stats are pretty useful, even if its just for seeing where your stuff is being seen (groups, hotlinked, etc)
If you are worried about your photos being stolen, you shouldn't have them on the internet at all. I usually watermark anything that I feel has some sort of value to anyone outside of me and the person it was taken for, or if I know it will be used in a place that will generate a higher amount of traffic. |
