Unless you are a gynecologist |
Maybe we need a Camel Toe challenge to put DPC on the map.

I don't know what his direct hosting/storage costs are but they cant be that much. It's a mature site, so I would guess it takes very little programming time and most of the day to day heavy lifting is done by a cadre of volunteers.
So in the end, here's a guy a few years out of college with a part time job/business probably netting him $50K+ every year. Again, why would he sell? |
Yeah, but you can't sit back on your laurels. Eventually, there will be a similar site with more features (bells and whistles). He'll need to keep this site modern and up-to-date on the latest technologies.
Also, I don't think that he could easily re-use this site or license it to someone else because this is a highly specialized and proprietary format.
Here are my list of upgrades that I think he'll need to survive (or at least keep up) in the long term:
Let me preface this with I know browser add-ons can do a lot, but we shouldn't have to rely on them.
- Create a companion iPhone app. "DPC? Yeah, there's an app for that!"
- Allow personalized avatars
- Rewrite the whole search engine:
. . + Allow searching in the photo's description field (the Photographer's Comments field)
. . + For both forum messages and photographs, allow searching of phrases (enclosed in quotes): e.g. the two words: sunset california should be a different search than "Sunset California", but it's not.
- Stop using personal email messages for PMs. DPC should have its own messaging subsystem for us to manage our messages. It's okay to notify us of a new PM via email, but make that configurable.
- Implement a richer message editor (fonts, colors, etc.)
- From the main page, in the list of forum messages, allow us to choose if we want to see who started the thread, as opposed to who last replied to the thread.
- Create multi-quote functionality when replying to multiple messages
- Having the preview of your message appear in your same browser (no popups)
- Allow geotagged photographs to appear on a map
I have to go now, but I'll add more "missing features" later. |
All great ideas, but requiring probably hundreds if not thousands of man hours of programming, testing, etc. My guess is there is little or no return on that investment. Are you willing to pay more for those features? Sure you would gain a few more members and probably lose a few less but not enough to justify the investment.
DPC is a mature product. The other direct competitors (e.g. eyefetch, fotofight, etc.) have fallen out of the race. Would you and your college programming buds put thousands of programming hours into developing something that might grab a portion of the DPC pie?

Just a quick note, the search engine we have is already capable of these features. To get a more details photos search, you need to adjust the criteria on the left of the search page. I've changed the default search mode to use Extended, which is capable of searching phrases and including/excluding words. So from the home page, you can now do "california sunset", and get what you're expecting. |
