Pretty compelling from a noise perspective. Were they shot Raw? |

Those are just JPEG. Presumably RAW would be even cleaner and show more detail. |

There seems to be some noise (especially in the first one). It's difficult to tell without a 100% crop. Having said that, generally, since most photos aren't posted like that, then the noise (or lack thereof) is more than acceptable.

Shannon, what software are you using? Have you kept to just jpeg or have you tried RAW yet? |

I've been shooting either JPEG or RAW+JPEG for now. Surprisingly, Photoshop CS4 already recognizes the RAW files and iPhoto/Quicktime handles the video format. |

Hmmm.... I'm guessing that means now I have to fork over for CS4. Figured I'd have to but may play with the Canon software for a little while. By sticking with the 30D for as long as I have, I haven't needed to upgrade! |

Deb, are you using Lightroom 2? If so you can always use the work around of exporting from there to CS3 since that version of lightroom has the latest canon raw software. Maybe a way to hold off upgrading the main program till a later time if you want. |

Nope, still on LR 1.0 While I really do like LR for some things, I'll probably upgrade Photoshop first. |

Amazing. At this rate, in 5-10 years noise might be something of the past with Digital cameras. :) |

Wow, that's pretty impressive to this 50D-noise-machine owner. I just bought a new computer so I guess I won't be seeing this for quite some time... |

I'm not sure how you would describe "effective," but both features work as advertised. I was playing with wireless flash last night, and it was very cool to be able to adjust the strength of the pop-up and/or external flashes from the camera itself (and simple enough that I haven't taken the manual out of the box yet). |

Hmm.... never thought you could control the strength of the pop up flash - that could come in very handy! |

Um... you can already do that with your 30D.
"Flash exposure compensation can be set in 1/3- or 1/2-stop increments up to +/-2 stops. FEC for both the built-in flash and a Speedlite can be set with the camera." |

Heh! And I thought you said you didn't read the manuals... :-) Never knew that about the 30D, but don't often use the flash. Really should learn a lot more about flash, just in general! (And still good to know as the 30D isn't going anywhere. Too much a member of the family, you know?) |

It's invaluable for situations where you want a touch of fill flash but where full power would overwhelm things.

I usually don't (and never owned a 30D). I looked it up after your post since a question about FEC with the original Rebel is what led me to DPChallenge in the first place. |

If it's like my 40D, I set it up so that I use the joystick to quickly select any of the focus points. Pressing the joystick straight in will move the focus point back to it's default position (the middle of the viewfinder).

actually you do use the joystick but there is an extra button on top by the shutter wich changes what your options are and sometimes it works and sometimes not? |

In reading the manual, which can be confusing, you will have different options available to you with different modes. In the fully automatic modes, you only get three choices. In the other modes you get more, and then you need to do something with custom functions for even more. This is where I have to go back and re-read because there is some nifty stuff in custom functions.
Custom menu 6 - you need to select "register" then click to check the boxes that don't have check marks, then apply.
Now if anyone figures how to work custom menu 12 and what it might do, please post that info here. Thanks!

Here's a question, 7D guys & gals...does the wireless flash control allow you to 2nd-curtain sync the flash? I looked for, but could not find, the answer.

Here's some cool photos (not from me) of the Seattle Zombie Walk (among other photographs) taken with the new Canon EOS 7D.

Oops, tomorrow is a work day and you won't be there to sign for it. It will just have to stay on the truck. How sad :-( |
