They would both give you great bokeh, the 1.4 just a tad better, but both do a nice job when you are using them wide open.

eta: the 50 1.4 is a great lens but has a bigger learning curve to master what it can really do. I think it requires more skill to master but in turn it also can help you learn those skills by figuring out how to make it do its magic. If you can afford it, get the 17-55 2.8 it will give you a little range and is an outstanding lens. Check out some of the images on DPC that were taken with it and you will see what I mean.

Since you just had back surgery, you might want to go to the store and try all the lenses you're considering. Personally, I found everything bigger than the 85 1.8 too heavy to use for very long without a tripod for the first nine months after my shoulder surgery.

Given those parameters, though, the 85 1.8 and the Tamron 28-75 2.8 are both excellent, and both are reasonably priced. The 85 1.4 is better, of course, but also bigger and heavier.
