My friend Chris Poulsen ( nightshift) took a pic up at Grants Pass with his brother-in-law Josh and it wound up on the Astronomy Picture of the Day.
If I remember the details, this is a composite of about four hours of 30 second exposures. Now that's some work!

Woa! Beautiful exposure. He took this shot with the Nikon D300?
How this 4 hour exposure of 30 seconds work? Sorry for the newbie question. |

I'm pretty sure they were using Josh's camera which is a D3 (if I remember).
Basically they were taking one 30 second exposure after another until the battery ran out, then Josh put them together in photoshop. What you wind up with is the star trail. |

You just sit there either using your remote trigger or you can actually set the camera to automatically capture a set number of images on its own.
That photo is lovely. I love the trails.
