I took some pictures of my daughters Girl Scout troop today, what do you think?

The composition, lighting, and focus looks good.

My question is... why black and white?

The sky was so overcast today and the water was a murky brown - i guess black and white just felt better with the bad colors of the day. Cleveland has so few blue sky days.

They're young, they look happy and energetic, mischevious almost, and are wearing warm weather clothing suggesting spring or summer. All that kinda screams out for bright colors. Their clothing is modern so the aged look wouldnt really work so well. As black and white I think it's a little flat.

The second image doesnt have much sky and water in it, how is that in color?

comments appreciated - I took the second shot real quick after the first - left the camera in black and white, your probably right, color would have been better, oh well...thats why Im here on this site, to learn, thanks again.

That could explain the fairly 'flat' tone of the black and white. Most in-camera black and white images are not really the best, and it's usually better to convert to black and white in post-processing. That way you always have to option to stick with color or convert.

I'm sure your daughter and her friends will love them anyways!
