Back in June I traveled to Italy for 9 days to visit a friend. I had a layover in Madrid both on the way there and on the way back, unfortunately not long enough to leave the airport. I arrived late in the day in Rome and spent the night in a random hotel near the train station. I woke up in the morning and hopped a train to Salerno, about 3 hours south of Rome, then boarded a bus that dropped me off in a tiny town named Atrani. Atrani is about a mile away from the town Amalfi on the Amalfi coast. Atrani consists of a single open square and two cafes. We stayed in an apartment there. Highlights of the week include:
1. Befriending the proprietors of one of the cafes and convincing them to prepare a delicious meal featuring local sea urchins if my friend and I went out to a rock formation about 100 feat from the shore and harvested them ourselves.
2. Renting a scooter and touring the coast. Very exciting (read perilous) way to take in the scenery and experience the culture.
3. Taking a bus to Positano, a slightly larger town about 12 miles away from Atrani, and walking back to Atrani through the mountains.
When the week was up, I repeated my travels in the reverse direction and found myself back in NYC. I slept in a hostel in Rome the night before my flight. I couldn't sleep and woke up at 5:30AM. I decided to get up and walk through Rome for a few hours before I caught the train to the airport. It was great! There was nobody around and the early morning light was perfect. When I go traveling again, I will do all my sight seeing before 11:00AM and lie on the beach/in the hot tub/on the boat/in the hammock for the rest of the day. :)
Anyway, I finally got around to processing the photos from the trip, and I posted them to my Flickr account. | It was fun to go through your shots Steve. I passed through that area and even spend a short time in the town of Amalfi 6 or 7 years back. Got to get back and hang out in one of those small towns again sometime. Thanks for the post. |
