Just an update on my submission for Opposites.

Some of the commenters stated that they couldn't believe that new housing had been built so close to a huge industrial facility such as the Halifax grain elevators. In my Photographer Comments I had mentioned that some of the houses were for sale. Well, I looked up listings on mls.ca (Canada wide listing for houses up for sale) and found one of them here. The photo includes part of the grain elevator in the right part of the photo.

Take a look here to see what I mean.

I know it's kind of a luxury house, but they want just under $500,000 CDN (almost $365,000 US) for some of the houses there! CRAAAYZEEE! Just goes to show how crazy the market is over here.

Here's another one, although you can't see the grain elevator on this one.

Man, if I had $500K to blow on a house I'd go buy it somewhere else!

how much does a house like that usually go for?

(my house cost me about 1/3 of the price of these, so I really have no concept of a bargain for houses of this size)

how many feet is it from the back door to the wall? looks like 15 feet or so ... being this close to such a huge wall probably changes the climate dramatically (no wind, reflected heat from wall, constant shade)

even in canadian dollars it seems dear considering where it's located...is this a desireable halifax neighborhood?? wacky!

Maybe there's hope that the owners of the grain elevator will sell (or that they can be pressured to sell). Voila, instant increase in property values.

Till your house gets crushed when there's an accident tearing the thing down. :)

Actually, i think whomever took the pictures (i assume twas the estate agent) should consider joining up to DPChallenge - there's certainly a budding photographer with some skill behind the lens with the staircase image - i found myself looking for an add to favourites button...

acutally i just realised the those places sell for less than a 2-bed terraced house round here... i think we should move to canada...

Compared to San Francisco prices this place you photograph is an extreme bargain. Probably almost $1,000,000 here.

Man, you guys have to come out here to the east coast. I live about 10 miles away from that $500k grain elevator house and paid barely $140k. Here's the proud owner and his house, just before closing back in August of 2002. Sorry for the crappy shot, but as you can see, I didn't take it :)

I'm a 15 minute drive from the center of Halifax, a 10 minute drive to an awesome white sand beach and a five minute drive from the deep woods. Lotsa trees, lotsa lakes, the ocean, reasonably affordable housing. Heck, I'm happy. All I need now is my DSLR!

My bro Jacko is even better than me. He got a sweet bungalow for less than $100k, I think.

Man, we're lucky!
