Hi All,
As many of you know my brother has gone to university in the US (from the UK) recently on a soccer scholarship. Earlier today he sent me a message to say we could watch his first match live tonight via the college website...well, I think I have signed up for the right thing but it's not showing a live game until 18th September. I can't get hold of my brother so was wondering if you guys could fill me in on whether watching college games live is normal for US colleges?? Here in the UK it's unheard of! His college athletics site can be found here.
If anyone's interested you can see the team here, my brother is the guy on the far right of the back row :) You can see his 'bit' on the team page here too :)
Cheers,
T

Wow. Small world. Insanely small world. I graduated from The Mount (Mount St. Marys, Emmitsburg, MD, US) in 2005.
My mind is kind of blown right now, as that school is so damn small, what are the odds. |

College sports is huge in the US. Many games are on TV for many sports, including soccer, american football, basketball, volleyball, etc. There are many regional sports networks that pick these games up and broadcast them. It looks as though Mt.St Mary's has a game today against VMI (Virginia Military Institute). I don't see that it is specifically being broadcast, but he clearly has a game today. Good luck to him. |

I woudln't expect to see MSM games on major networks.
Fun fact: John's (of john and kate plus 8) brother is one of the coaches of the womens soccer team. |

Ah now, would this be why it wont be live on the MSM site
"next on tap... The Mount will travel to Loyola on Friday. Mount St. Mary's opens the season with five-straight road games and will make its Waldron Family Stadium debut against Howard on Sept. 18"
Would that mean to watch the game I should check out the other colleges website and see if it's possible to watch it there?? I really have no idea about this sort of stuff!! |

That might be a good way to see if his games are on. It is amazing the stuff that is broadcast now, and i wouldn't be surprised if at least a few of the games are on a web feed. |

Another fun fact: I asked my girlfriend to marry me in the area of the mountain directly behind that scoreboard. (In the grotto at the top of the mountain) |

Well, they won 4 - 0! However, here in the UK if you are injured and substituted you can't then go back on the field, but, it looks like the rules are different over there?? |

I was under the impression it was the same rule. Maybe its ruled like rugby...you can get a blood substitution (if a player is bleeding) and the bleeding player can return once hes mended (usually via mud up the nose or massive amounts of vaseline on the wound.)

NCAA rules allow reentry into the game under specific situations. NCAA rules allow significantly more substitutions than pro soccer. Reentry ofany field player (non-goalie) can occur during the second half of the game. I believe goalies can reenter the game under multiple conditions. |
